September Monthly Meeting and Educational Program
Will My Student (Or I) Be Ready for Middle School?
Session 1: Middle School - Lead by Koni Withers
(How in the world will my student (or I) be ready for Middle School?)

Join us for the first session in a three part Series led by Koni Withers, PVUSD Counselor. A prior UPC program focused on College and Career readiness. The program touched on elementary to high school needs and resources. This breakdown of the sessions will allow us to go more deeply into the various stages of Secondary School preparation.

*This first presentation will focus on Middle School Preparation as well as the transition to high school and all you need to know and be ready for in the PVUSD school district.

Future Sessions:
Session 2: Freshman and Sophomore Preparation  
Session 3: Junior/Senior year, ACT/SAT Preparation 

*ALL UPC Monthly meeting and educational program - open to public 

The program will take place September 26, 2018 at 10:15 a.m., after the UPC Monthly Meeting at 9:00 a.m.

First Time UPC Representative Luncheon

Attention principals and veteran UPC members! Please share our upcoming UPC Rep Luncheon with potential new UPC Reps or Alternates!                 

The 2018-19 First Time UPC Representative Luncheon will be held on September 26.  If this is your first time as a UPC Rep or Alternate, or perhaps you are considering taking on this role for your school, or you are a parent liaison, you are invited to stay and join us for a brief orientation lunch immediately following the September UPC Monthly Meeting and Educational Program.
Luncheon will be held in the Critical Thinking Room in the CRC (across the parking lot from our regular meeting) and will start at approximately 11:30.

Visit with UPC executive board members, Dr. Lee, and district cabinet members, and learn about everything you need to know to serve as a liaison for your school community.  This luncheon is intended for all first-time UPC reps, alternates, and parent liaisons.

Understanding Social & Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners

 Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 6 PM - 7:30 PM

District Administrative Center - Governing Board Room 

Gifted and high ability learners may struggle to find ways to connect with peers and establish lasting friendships. Perfectionism, anxiety, motivation and other social struggles may impact the academic and social development of these learners.  Learn more HERE. 

About the Speaker:

Karen Brown, a National Board Certified Teacher, is the Gifted Program Mentor for Paradise Valley School District.

Upcoming Gifted Programming:

Parents of gifted children please join us on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00PM to 7:30 PM in the Governing Board Room to hear Dr. Paul Beljan, a pediatric neuropsychologist discuss a wide variety of gifted concepts. Topics will include, signs gifted children present, what to do once your child has been identified as gifted, asynchronous development including possible origins, and diagnostic concepts in gifted intelligence
UPC encourages a NO Vote on Prop 305

As an advocacy association, UPC along with AZ PTA encourages PTAs to get involved with ballot issues pertaining to children. 
United Parent Council's goals include advocacy for PV Schools' students. UPC supports prioritizing and fully funding Arizona's public schools. 
As part of our advocacy UPC voted unanimously to oppose 305 .

October Monthly Meeting and Educational Program

October Educational Programming - PVEA Overview 
Join us for our October Program and meet Leah Knaeble, President of the PV Education Association. Leah will discuss what the organization encompasses and her leadership role.  The overview of PVEA  will cover the organization's efforts to advocate for teachers and students as well as discuss collaboration with the United Parent Council and other organizations in Arizona to improve public education.
The PVEA Overview program will take place October 17, 2018 at 10:15 a.m., after the UPC Monthly Meeting at 9:00 a.m.
