Small Businesses Love Big grant cycle makes hunger a priority

By John Bailey

Catawba County United Way

Addressing the issue of hunger was the leading focus during the Catawba County United Way’s third grant cycle of the year.

In September, the Catawba County United Way (CCUW) board approved the Small Businesses Love Big grant committee’s recommendation to allocate $23,750 to fund 10 local non-profit agencies.

The CCUW’s Small Businesses Love Big grant cycle is an opportunity for small companies in Catawba County (50 employees or less) to invest back into their communities by supporting non-profit programs.

“What I like about this grant is that it addresses some specific needs, like the refrigerator, like the mattresses,” Cynda Bollinger from Catawba Valley Insurance and SBLB grant committee member said.

Anyone can be a mentor, sharing life lessons with local youth

By John Bailey

Catawba County United Way

Tracey Paul, Mentoring Program Coordinator for the Council on Adolescents (COA), recently attended the Carolina’s Youth Mentoring Symposium in Durham, and the Catawba County United Way (CCUW) thought this would be a good time to talk to her about the experience there and about the current needs for mentors locally.

Every year education is one of the CCUW’s Impact Areas of interest, focused on helping children and youth achieve their potential, and the United Way’s partnership with the COA helps meet this need.

(CCUW) What was the most impactful thing you learned at the symposium?

(Tracey) Anyone can be a mentor, if you’re willing to make the time and take the time to share life lessons and be there through the ups and downs of life, guiding someone in the right direction. We all want to be loved and respected, seen and heard. Relationship resilience helps you learn from your mistakes, move on, and make better decisions next time. It’s a privilege to be a mentor and simply listen to someone else.

Habitat for Humanity, building affordable homes in Ridgeview

The Catawba County United Way is launching a new Video Series - Hope in Action - with our funded partners to address some of the most significant challenges individuals and families face in Catawba County.

(We paused this series after the initial video with The Corner Table at the end of September, focusing on our work with Hurricane Helene relief projects.)

Our objective for the series is to educate and raise community awareness about these key issues and related resources in a series of conversations with local nonprofit leaders.

In this segment, the CCUW sat down with the Mitzi Gellman, the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley.

“We know that families who live in stable housing earn more money, their kids do better in school and their lifetime savings from being a home increases dramatically,” Gellman said in the video.
