Race United offers fireworks, community outreach, food drive

On Sept. 14, the Catawba County United Way kick's off its annual campaign with a Free night of racing and Fireworks in partnership with the Hickory Motor Speedway held during their season Championships.

The event also introduces the public to local non-profits during a Resource Fair prior to the start of racing, with prizes for visiting all the non-profit agencies. A Food Drive benefiting local pantries will be held as well. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing starting at 7 p.m.

Senior Nutrition Services looking for volunteers

Senior Nutrition Services, a Catawba County United Way partners, needs your help.

The program is looking for volunteers in the West Hickory area to help deliver meals once a month to homebound seniors through Meals on Wheels. 

There are two pick up locations in West Hickory: Open Door Baptist Church and Marketplace Church. Meals are delivered Mon-Thurs each week. Also…the North Hickory Seniors Morning Out (SMO) site is now open, to individuals 60 or older. This an opportunity for seniors to enjoy a meal, fun, and fellowship Monday through Thursday mornings. Activities at the site include crafting classes, musical performances by local artists, educational discussions with local health professionals, cooking classes and more. North Hickory SMO is located at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church, 3702 16th St NE, Hickory, NC. For more information, call 828-695-5610.

The applications for Centro Latino’s Abriendo Puertas scholarships, to honor Latino students during our Hispanic Heritage Month, are now open.

United Way collecting for Point In Time homeless count

The Catawba County United Way is helping with the Point-in-Time homeless count on July 24 by collecting personal hygiene products to hand out during the event at the Hickory Soup Kitchen.

You can drop off travel size hygiene items - soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, wash clothes, at the United Way office Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. - 2760 Tate Blvd SE in Hickory or call 828-327-6851.

The Point-in-Time count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless is mandated by the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development.

We've all heard the phrase - "It takes a village," and in the non-profit world it's true. The Catawba County United Way enjoys building relationships with its community partners and sees how much greater our impact is because of our collective efforts every day.
