Local chiropractic company joins Small Businesses Love Big

The Catawba County United Way is excited to welcome New Directions Chiropractic in Hickory (1333 2nd Street NE, Ste 312) to the CCUW’s Small Businesses Love Big (SBLB) initiative.

This is an opportunity for small companies in Catawba County (50 employees or less) to invest back into their communities by supporting local non-profit programs.

Last year's SBLB non-profit grant recipients projected helping more than 3,000 individuals in the areas of food insecurity, crisis assistance, maintaining employment and mental health services.

Each participating SBLB company contributes $365 a year, which will be used to fund this new Catawba County United Way allocation process focused on local small and start-up non-profits.

In the past, this initiative has supported non-profit programs focused on addressing the issue of food insecurity and emergency financial assistance.

Representatives of the businesses will meet in September to review the grant applications and decide what programs to fund.

This year’s grant cycle for Small Businesses Love Big opens in August.

News Nuggets - updates from nonprofits and public agencies

Catawba County Animal Services recently announced a new partnership with Living Hope Canine Rescue to bring the New Lease on Life program to Catawba Correctional Center.

This life-changing program gives second chances to both dogs and humans. Offenders will be paired with at-risk shelter dogs and together they’ll embark on a journey of growth, healing, and hope. Inmates will help the dogs learn obedience and socialization skills — preparing them for their future forever homes.

It’s more than training — it’s transformation. For the dogs. For the people. For our community.

Exodus Homes apartments in urgent need of repairs

The Exodus Homes apartment complex known as “The Shoe” — built in 1959 — is in crisis. This aging structure houses 34 residents and includes our administrative office, a community room, and 16 apartments. It’s more than a building — it’s a foundation of hope and recovery for people rebuilding their lives after addiction, incarceration, and homelessness.

But the building’s original galvanized plumbing is failing. Just this week, a major leak in Apartment 6 caused significant damage. The plumbing system throughout the entire complex is corroded and must be replaced.

To complete this critical project, the agency must:

  • Remove all cabinets and flooring
  • Open stucco walls to access and replace all piping
  • Install new pipes, flooring, and baseboards
  • Repair and repaint all walls and ceilings

The expected cost is approximately $200,000 to complete all the work.

Without these repairs, the program will be forced to reduce capacity — meaning:

  • More individuals turned away from the opportunity to rebuild
  • Higher rates of relapse and recidivism
  • More pressure on shelters and emergency services
  • Less hope for people who have nowhere else to turn

At Exodus Homes, every bed represents a life in transition — someone choosing a new path toward stability, purpose, and dignity. “The Shoe” has served the agency's mission for over six decades.
