Faith in Action
United Way of Westmoreland County

Pennsylvania is one of the top states for an aging population.  By 2030, nearly 30% of the population will be 60 years and older.  To address the rising number of seniors in our communities, many United Ways have programs to keep older adults safe in their homes.  The United Way of Westmoreland County provides a program called Faith in Action that connects volunteers to seniors who need some extra help.

Faith in Action (FIA) extends the length of time older adults can live safely and securely in their own homes, by matching participants with trained and compassionate volunteers. Volunteers provide a variety of free, non-medical services to participants, including services such as minor home repairs, appointment escorts, home visits, and caregiver relief.

For more than 10 years, FIA has provided over 100,000 hours of volunteer service for nearly 2,500 older adults. They have been recognized by the National Council of Aging as one of seven effective, multi-generational programs across the country.  The program operates from seven different sites throughout the county and is free for persons 60 years or older.

When asked what the best part of being a partner agency with United Way, CSVC Executive Director, Mary Jeanne Gavin, said, "The best part is the networking with various agencies in the community and the assistance from our local United Way.  We work with each other to accomplish the goal of reducing poverty in our community and assisting families to become more self-sufficient."  Additionally, she mentions, "Our local United Way is always striving to assist partner agencies in meeting each agency goals.  The staff is amazing and they are helpful to our community and to the partner agencies."

CSVC will be celebrating 50 years in 2017, which is a testament to the great work they are doing throughout Venango County.  The United Way of Venango County is happy to partner with CSVC and continue to provide the community with needed services.  To learn more about CSVC, please visit their website.
