Beaufort County United Way
Welcomes New Executive Director
In April, the Board of Directors for the Beaufort County United Way named Sue Tidd the next Executive Director. She succeeds Sally Love who retired in May.

Tidd brings with her over 25 years of experience working in various capacities for local and national non-profits, including United Way of Mid-Maine, United Way of Pitt County, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In her previous roles, Tidd organized fundraising events, marketing and communication plans, coordinated volunteer initiatives for youth and adults, and led community engagement activities.

“I believe wholeheartedly in the approach United Way takes to solving complex community issues,” Tidd shares. “We can accomplish so much more when together we collectively define the issues and create a shared vision to solve it.”

This fall, The Beaufort County United Way will launch a community assessment and will look for members of Beaufort County communities to participate in an online survey and group conversations to better understand the challenges and barriers people face. The Community Impact Task Force, made up of local volunteers who are issue area experts, will lead the assessment and guide United Way’s alignment of its operations, resources, and efforts in a way to ensure a focus on delivering positive community impact and results in the Beaufort County community.

“We need to better understand the challenges people struggle with that stop them from living their best lives.” says Tidd. “We must begin by asking them.”
Will U accept the CHALLENGE?
The Beaufort County United Way is excited to announce an initiative that will connect community members with opportunities to volunteer that are easy, meaningful, and impactful.

October is
HOW TO GET STARTED!
Before we know it, the cold winds of winter will be blowing, freezing toes and ankles. Making it downright uncomfortable and dangerous, especially for small children and the elderly.

United Way is challenging members of our Beaufort County communities to collect new socks throughout October. Socks of all colors and sizes are needed! Baby and child/toddler sizes to children and adult s. Socks will be distributed to local organizations who support children, families and elderly.

Let United Way know you are participating in the SOCKTOBER Challenge! Email Sue
stidd@unitedwaybc.net. At the end of the month, contact United Way to make arrangements to drop-off socks.
Workplace SOCKTOBER
  • Organize a drop-off location at work.
  • Dress up a box or collection device.
  • Decorate it so it stands out! Include a sign. Then get the word out to your co-workers. Invite contractors and vendors to participate.
  • Set a goal of how many to collect.
  • Organize an interdepartmental challenge to see who can collect the most pairs of socks!
  • If you work with the public, or customers, place the collection bin where they can also contribute to the challenge.
  • At the end of the collection period, make sure to publicize how many socks were collected and thank all who participated.
Neighborhood SOCKTOBER
  • Organize a drop-off location on a neighbor's porch, community center or another central location in the neighborhood.
  • Dress up a box or tote.
  • If it will be left outside, make sure to use a waterproof tote with a tight cover.
  • Decorate it so it stands out! Include a sign. Then get the word out to your neighborhood.
  • Issue a challenge to other neighborhoods, or one side of the street versus the other.
  • At the end of the collection period, be sure to publicize the number of socks collected and thank all who donated.
COMMUNITY SURVEY and
COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS
Becoming the United Way our communities need.

Since our inception in 1961, the Beaufort County United Way has been a strong fundraiser. This ability to fundraise made "fundraising" the mission and in return, put our mandate to improve lives and strengthen communities on the back burner.

This United Way must be a dedicated problem solver who will impact the most critical social issues in our community and build a stronger future. To that end, we are launching a volunteer led Community Impact Task Force,

During this process, we will look at the powerful relationship between the community and United Way to gain a greater understanding of local issues by learning from the people in our community whose lives we hope to impact, helping us shape exciting new goals for our community.

Achieving these goals will require a new way to invest our resources, focus our funding, and build collective impact. This will be a new path for our United Way and the community, a path that will be fueled by voices that matter, YOURS.

The assessment process will take time. There are health and human service experts to consult, community leaders to activate, and many-many community members to engage. Assessment results will be shared communitywide so everyone may better understand the issues and challenges people are facing every day in our community.

Keep an eye on your email, as the survey will be released soon. We hope you will take a few minutes to participate by completing the survey.
