Partner Agencies:
Community Stories
Thanks to the generous support of our funders and donors like you, United Way of Tucson has been able to help individuals and families start to recover and rebuild their lives in conjunction with our partner organizations. Below you will read the stories of these individuals and how they have been directly affected during this COVID-19 crisis.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Sunnyside Foundation: “The Martinez* family includes seven people – Mom, Dad, and five school-age children. Recently, Dad lost his job due to COVID and has been unable to find new work. Mom has continued working, and now the family is depending solely on her income for support. With remote school starting, the family knew that internet might pose a challenge. While they have service, it quickly became clear that their current data plan would not be able to support all five children online simultaneously during a school day. After exploring a few available programs only to realize that the family didn’t qualify, we were able to use COVID-19 funds to help. These funds are helping the family expand their bandwidth all semester or until the children can safely return to school.”
Food and Rental Assistance
Pima Council on Aging: “In the past two weeks, the United for Southern Arizona COVID-19 Fund has allowed us to help nine households with emergency needs. Among them were a 72 year old woman and her husband who have been having trouble making ends meet. Money has been so tight that she has been reducing her prescribed insulin intake in order to have enough money for food. Another family of three all tested positive for COVID-19, causing them to miss out on work hours in addition to being sick. This family found themselves short on rent and worried about making up the difference. COVID funds helped us give both households gift cards for groceries and rent assistance so that they could start to recover.”
