Funds raised are distributed to partner agencies and go directly to helping local individuals and families in our community as we work towards recovering and rebuilding our community from the COVID-19 crisis. It is only through your generosity that we are able to create a positive impact in the lives of others. Thank you for making this possible! Read on below for individual stories of impact, volunteer opportunities and other important updates.
Partner Agencies:
Community Stories
Thanks to the generous support of our funders and donors like you, United Way of Tucson has been able to help individuals and families start to recover and rebuild their lives in conjunction with our partner organizations. Below you will read the stories of these individuals and how they have been directly affected during this COVID-19 crisis.
Family Assistance
From Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona : “We have been working with a single mother, Crystal*, who was pregnant with her second child and had just started a new job in March. Unfortunately, Crystal was laid off when COVID arrived. At that same time, her pregnancy became much more difficult, adding stress and health concerns to the new household financial burdens. Fortunately, Crystal gave birth to a healthy baby boy in April. Support from the United for Southern Arizona COVID-19 Fund will help Crystal, her four-year-old, and her newborn son pay rent and keep the family housed during this difficult time. Our agency is able to supplement this rental assistance by providing Crystal with other essentials such as food, clothing, and diapers and assisting her search for full-time employment.”
Housing Assistance
From Sunnyside Foundation: “Maria* is a single mother with four children, all of whom have been or are currently enrolled in Sunnyside schools. Maria has never been late on rent while living in her home, but she lost her job in hotel services when the pandemic hit. By the time she contacted us, the family had exhausted all other systemic supports. They were in crisis and one day from eviction. Maria had found a new job by this time but was still in her 10 day wait period, unable to come up with the immediate money for rent. We were able to use the United for Southern Arizona COVID-19 Fund to pay her rent and then take appropriate action to ensure illegal evictions don’t threaten the family in the future. Without United Way’s support, this family would have been homeless: a single mother with four young children. But we were able to help - thank you!!”
Diaper Assistance
From the Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona: “Thanks to the United for Southern Arizona COVID-19 Fund, we were able to collaborate with the Family Resource Center to provide diapers for over 90 families in Rio Rico and Nogales in Santa Cruz County. This distribution was possible through partnerships with Americorps, Mariposa Community Health Center, Child and Family Resources, Childcare Health Consultant, and Los Padres. Many of the families were extremely grateful for the support and offered up their thanks" - a few of their notes of appreciation can be found below:
  • ‘Good afternoon, I am writing you this message to tell you how much I appreciate the help with my babies. Especially in this difficult time I am very grateful in all the love I have been receiving from this program. Making me feel excited and positive for this new baby on the way. I am more than grateful for this program. Thank you so much for the diapers.’

  • ‘Me sentí bien, muchas gracias en verdad por la ayuda. Y la verdad si los ocupaba porqué casi no eh encontrado.’ Translation: I felt good, thank you very much indeed for the help. And truthfully, we needed them because I practically haven’t been able to find them.

  • 'It is so hard to go to the store. My daughter has been sick, and I barely had any diapers. Thank you so much for these for my baby.’
