JFS of Greenwich Advocates on Capitol Hill

JFS of Greenwich is a proud member of the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies (NJHSA), which provides a range of support to affiliates across the U.S. and Canada. CEO Rachel Kornfeld and COO Melissa Knee recently joined 27 colleagues from 17 states for the Annual NJHSA Fly-In on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The Network’s Director of Public Policy and Advocacy, Jonathan Schrag, coordinated over 100 meetings, allowing affiliates to engage with members of Congress on critical issues affecting the vulnerable populations they serve.

Beginning at the Office of Health and Human Services, discussions highlighted the vital role of JFS affiliates and other faith-based human service organizations. Despite the rainy weather, the spirit of empathy, unity, and advocacy remained strong. Rachel said, “I am incredibly grateful to live and work in the State of Connecticut, represented by elected officials who care about the health and well-being of all residents.”

A heartfelt thank you to the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies for uniting our voices in the pursuit of meaningful change.

A Story of Legacy, Compassion, and Struggles

In his moving article, "Land of Liberty, On Pause," Jonathan Kantor, a dedicated volunteer at JFS, shares a deeply personal story that weaves together his family’s history of Holocaust survival and their unwavering commitment to helping others in need. Drawing inspiration from his grandparents’ legacy, Jonathan reflects on the current challenges facing refugees and immigrants in America. He reminds us of the values that have always made this country great—compassion, opportunity, and the promise of the American Dream.

Featured in the Greenwich Free Press, Jonathan’s article urges us to consider how we can support those seeking a better life, just as his grandparents once did.

Empowering Ukrainian Women Through Auto Safety Education

We’re thrilled to share that three of our Ukrainian female clients have successfully completed an auto safety education program through our partnership with Lewis Driving School of New Canaan—and have obtained their driver’s licenses! This initiative, an extension of our Ukrainian Women: Stronger Together program, boosted their independence and self-confidence. The program’s foundation was made possible by a grant from the UJA-JCC Teen Change Makers.

These clients were selected to participate as part of our Intensive Case Management (ICM) program, which provides specialized support to particularly vulnerable refugees with complex needs. Through tailored interventions and long-term assistance, ICM helps clients work toward self-sufficiency and stability. Highly motivated to overcome personal challenges, these women, working closely with their ICM case manager, Irina Degtyur, have been actively improving their language skills by attending our ESL classes and utilizing our job search services. This experience has not only equipped them with essential life skills but has also positively impacted their mental health and future opportunities for independence.
