Canadian charities unite to respond to humanitarian crisis in East Africa

Donations made by June 30 will be matched by the Government of Canada

Military clashes, persistent drought, famine and an increasing number of refugees have all led to a humanitarian crisis in East Africa. Twelve Canadian aid agencies working together as the Humanitarian Coalition are raising funds to rush assistance to people in need. PWRDF is responding to this crisis as a member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, one of the 12 organizations that make up the Humanitarian Coalition.

PWRDF supports trauma-healing and peacebuilding in South Sudan

PWRDF is providing an annual grant of $16,000 to advance trauma-healing and peacebuilding initiatives in South Sudanese communities, thanks to a generous gift from the Ptarmigan Foundation. In June 2022, NBGIP’s Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Officer ran a five-day Wau Multiethnic Peace Dialogue. There were 50 participants from nine different tribes, comprising men and women of Christian and Muslim faith. PWRDF’s grant will enable the NBGIP to reach out to even more communities in need of similar initiatives.

PWRDF responds to Kherson dam collapse in Ukraine

On June 6, an explosion destroyed the dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in Kherson, Ukraine. The ongoing war and Russian occupation in Ukraine have created a state of chaos, with impacts to the economy, agriculture and power supplies, and the dam disaster is only worsening these struggles. PWRDF responded with $100,000 to an ACT Alliance appeal for funds to aid in emergency relief efforts. These funds are being allocated to Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA)’s rapid response in the region.

PWRDF continues to support Gaza hospital

PWRDF is providing an emergency grant to support the overburdened Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza as it responds to increasing demand brought on by escalating violence in the region. Archbishop Hosam Naoum appealed to international partners including PWRDF in May as attacks on Gaza intensified and violence erupted, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people and injuring almost 150 more. PWRDF sent $25,000 to support the hospital – which is managed by the Diocese of Jerusalem – to obtain fuel for generators, emergency medicine and medical supplies.

Creation Care: Climate Action 2.2

Climate-change emergencies and women

In year two of our Creation Care: Climate Action education focus, we are exploring the intersections between Climate Change and Gender. Learning Module 2.2 is focussed on Climate change emergencies and Women. It includes a recorded South-North dialogue with Bishop Jane Alexander, now ministering in the Territory of the People, and Mary Obiero with Church World Service Africa, as they discuss how women are impacted by emergencies caused by climate change, be they fires, floods or droughts. How are women impacted differently than men? And how are they responding? The resource includes scripture readings and questions for Bible study, as well as suggested activities for a parish group.
