January 2020
Greetings!

Happy New Year to you and yours! A new year and a new decade are upon us, and we are excited about what this means at Unity College. We move into this new year celebrating various successes across the institution, including the rapid growth of our Distance Education programs and the impressive work being done on our Flagship campus, along with Unity College: Sky Lodge and McKay Farm and Research Station going strong toward achieving their goals for the year. The Spring term for our Distance Education programs are under way, and our Flagship students are jumping into an exciting Spring semester on our campus. This semester will bring innovative student research, incredible hands-on learning experiences online, on-campus, and throughout the state and country, as well as many opportunities to create the fun memories that you know will last these students a lifetime. We hope your year is off to a great start!
Unity in the News

As employers’ demand for those career-related skills increases, Unity College is investing in a forward-facing career office, to lead and support its vibrant curriculum and to facilitate changing the way we deliver the first two years of education for students. TERRAIN at Unity College uses Expeditionary Learning as its educational model, with innovative and integrated courses where students receive comprehensive, relevant, and outcome-based opportunities to help build or retool their knowledge and professional skills in sustainability fields.

Unity College, through its Distance Education offerings, has a lot to celebrate as 2020 kicks off. In 2019 Unity College Distance Education added multiple new degree programs, a Sustainability Business Micro-Credential, moved its home office to Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine, and increased the number of team members. Not resting on its laurels, however, Distance Education is starting the new year on a high note, announcing five more new degree programs to its ever-expanding catalog.

Internships are one of the pillars of a Unity College education, and even though students receive ample opportunities to get hands-on education through the College’s experiential curriculum, nothing can quite compare to getting out in the field alongside your future peers. In recent years, Unity College has placed an emphasis on students applying for and engaging in internship work, with Internship Coordinator Kristine McCallister working with students to help make professional connections and find beneficial internship opportunities related to their field of interest.

Alaska, Curacao, Manhattan, and Ecuador. These are just some of the places that our Summer 2020 Travel Courses are going! Check out the link for full course details and descriptions.

“My job is to help support the NRCS mission by being a face-to-face contact with farmers and producers. We have conservation goals, and we basically work with producers and suggest more conservation-minded and efficient practices. I spend time in the field during the summer and do more office-based planning in the winter. I help create plans to improve wildlife habitat, water quality, and soil health among other things.” Check out the interview to learn how Unity College prepared Emily for this exciting role!

“I started getting involved in research projects pretty early on in my freshman year. I started working on getting sediment cores and doing different work on that. In my sophomore year into junior year, I applied for a fellowship through the EPA to fund research through Unity, which I received, and I was able to continue to do even more research on Lake Winnecook.” Check out the interview to learn how Rae-Ann’s experience at Unity guided her to her graduate work!
