Why Is Black History Month So Important?

As Unity observes and celebrates Black History Month, some of its Black leaders explain why Black History Month remains important, especially in a spiritual context.

"If you take time to sincerely hear and know another person’s story, particularly if it’s someone you feel separate from or have been taught to tolerate, something powerful can happen. You can move beyond toleration to appreciation and even perhaps have a love for those people.

Nearly everyone has known hardship and setbacks in life, just as we have all experienced joy in this journey of life. When you know their story, the sense of separation begins to fall away. African Americans have a myriad of stories to tell about their lives and their history, and their stories are interconnected with the greatest story of all humanity—and that is, we are all one.

This is why Black History Month is important. The stories that describe the lives and the history of African Americans can help remind us that despite the appearance of separate bodies, individual personalities, and different pursuits, we are one humanity, each with a unique contribution to make to the human race.

When all the stories of the different expressions of humanity are told, we’ll not just see color, but we will see different shades and expressions of the infinite presence of the universe, or what we call God, revealing itself. We’ll not just see separate cultures; we’ll see the many variations of how Spirit needs all of the cultures and races to reveal its infinite nature."

~Rev. James Trapp

Chaplains Corner

During this sacred season of Lent, we are called to “cross out” false beliefs and release error thoughts that keep us bound in separation. We are invited to return our inner sanctuary where Spirit dwells. In this stillness, we remember who we truly are: spiritual beings, whole and holy, endowed with the power to rise. I make room for my Christ light within to shine out into my world. For complete article click here.

Message from the Board

Last Sunday was nothing short of extraordinary. The energy in our sanctuary was vibrant, heartfelt, and deeply moving as Dr. Yemaja Jubilee shared her powerful story of growing up in the Jim Crow era — and how she transformed trauma into triumph through healing, resilience, and radical love. Her message was both sobering and uplifting, reminding us that love is not naïve — it is courageous.

The screening of her documentary, followed by a thoughtful and honest Q&A session, created sacred space for important and sometimes uncomfortable conversations. And the inspirational performances by Jareefa Flemming brought a spirit of celebration and soul that resonated through every corner of our sanctuary. We were blessed to be surrounded by a full house of new and returning friends. Our commUnity is alive and THRIVING!

Looking ahead, our Spiritual Outreach team is joyfully preparing for the 2026 CommUnity Holistic Expo on Saturday, April 18th — a dream five years in the making. UWSC will host holistic practitioners, metaphysical experts, wellness providers, artisans, and community-centered businesses. If you know practitioners, vendors, or favorite local food trucks that would be a great fit, please let us know so we can connect them with the team.

As we step into this season of renewal — and celebrate the Lunar New Year — may we continue building a spiritual home where healing, courage, and love flourish.

Blessings,
