University Convocation set for Aug. 18

Mark your calendars! Please join President William A. Covino at the 2022 University Convocation on Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. in the Luckman Fine Arts Complex. The event marks the start of the new academic year as the University continues to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The program will include the introduction of new faculty and the announcement of the Outstanding Professor Awards, the Outstanding Lecturer Award, and the President’s Distinguished Professor Award. Facilities Champions will also be recognized. Please confirm your attendance by 5 p.m. on Aug. 15.

Cal State LA video projects win Telly, CASE awards

Cal State LA was recognized by the nationally renowned Telly Awards for a documentary short, “Lives Transformed: The Story of Cal State LA's Prison B.A. Graduation Initiative.” The University received a Silver Award for the non-broadcast video in the general documentary-individual category. Cal State LA has also won a Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Award for outstanding work in the video – student audience category. CASE presented the University a Silver Award for the short video, “Cal State LA: Ranked #1 for Upward Mobility,” explaining Cal State LA's ranking as the number one university in the nation for the upward mobility of its students.

Support the Transforming the University Library Fund

Cal State LA has recently established the Transforming the University Library Fund to help create a space for discovery, creativity and engagement. Those who contribute to this fund with a gift of $75 or more will have their names included in a time capsule placed at the University Library as part of the University’s 75th-anniversary festivities. The capsule is scheduled to be opened for the University’s centennial in 2047. Please visit the University Library Fund webpage to make your gift and become a lasting part of Cal State LA as we forge ahead into the future.

Silverman Gallery features works celebrating Los Angeles from the Weisman collection

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA is presenting an exhibition titled “WE ARE LA: Contemporary Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation.” This exhibit is on display now through Oct. 22 and highlights nearly 60 works selected by Foundation Director Billie Milam Weisman from the Weisman collection and is a celebration of Los Angeles. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 12 to 5 p.m.

Luckman presents the Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex will present the world premiere of Seeds of Rain by the Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet on Aug. 13. Choreographed by Raiford Rogers, the performance features music by Philip Glass and Zbynek Mateju, with organist Mark Alan Hilt and pianist Helena Sucharova Weiser, and with art projections by Mike Nava. Visit the Luckman website for tickets and more information.

University Reports is accepting entries from faculty, staff

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs is accepting submissions for the next edition of University Reports. The web publication showcases professional activities and publications, as well as the awards received by our faculty and staff. Submit your information to the Office of Communications and Public Affairs at [email protected] for inclusion in the next issue.

Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. The next training is scheduled for Sept. 9. Please check the training website for dates and registration information.
