University Convocation and Investiture planned for next month

The Cal State LA community is invited to attend the University Convocation and Investiture on Monday, Aug. 18. This joint event will mark the start of the 2025-26 academic year and celebrate Berenecea Johnson Eanes as the university’s ninth president. The program will also include the announcement of the Outstanding Professor Awards, the Outstanding Lecturer Award, and the President’s Distinguished Professor Award. Please register online by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8. Additionally, faculty participants are asked to wear academic regalia, with complimentary regalia rentals provided. Faculty must submit their online regalia order by Friday, July 18. For other investiture-related events, please visit the official website.

The Ultimate 'We Are LA' Campus Celebration on Aug. 20

Join us for The Ultimate "We Are LA" Campus Celebration on Wednesday, August 20, from 3 to 7 p.m., with the fun kicking off at 2 p.m. with free-play pickleball games. Held as part of the University Convocation and Investiture festivities, this lively, block party-style event will celebrate the spirit of Cal State LA and highlight the theme: "We Are LA: Empowering Dreams, Transforming Lives." Enjoy an exciting afternoon of live music from local bands and DJs, a classic and custom car show, delicious eats from fan-favorite food trucks, and a curated student art exhibit featuring submissions from across campus and awarding three top prizes.

Cal State LA hosts We Run LA Cross Country Invitational

Cal State LA will host the inaugural We Run LA Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, August 30, with the start line at the Jesse Owens Track and Field at University Stadium. Sponsored by Cal State LA and Loyola High School, the invitational is open to high school students from across Los Angeles. The event will also feature a special community run open to Cal State LA faculty, staff, students, alumni, and local residents. Find out more on the event webpage.

New academic degree programs to launch this fall

Beginning this fall semester, Cal State LA will offer two new graduate-level academic programs: a Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in School Psychology. These programs are designed to prepare highly skilled practitioners to address critical needs in behavioral health and educational settings.

Silverman Gallery features an exhibition titled ‘Thru the Lens’

The Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State LA presents Thru the Lens: Photographic Art from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. Curated by Billie Milam Weisman, Thru the Lens features over three dozen artists who explore various forms and methods of the photographic process. The exhibit will be on display from July 21 to Oct. 25. The opening reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m. 

The Luckman presents a performance by La Santa Cecilia 

La Santa Cecilia will perform at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex on Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14. La Santa Cecilia is a genre-defying ensemble that masterfully blends Latin rock with a rich tapestry of world music influences, drawing from cumbia, bossa nova, bolero, jazz, ranchera, and more. Cal State LA faculty and staff can purchase discounted tickets at the Luckman Box Office upon presentation of a valid Cal State LA One Card. For ticket information, call 323-343-6600. 

ITS Training Program offers hands-on workshops

The ITS Training Program offers hands-on workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Topics offered include Adobe Sign, ChatGPT Edu, Classroom Technology, ELMO Document Camera, iPad, and Web Accessibility. For information on workshops and schedules, visit the ITS Workshops webpage. Sign up for Mental Health First Aid Training

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training this summer. This program teaches participants how to assist someone experiencing a crisis. Participants learn risk factors and warning signs of serious and developing mental health problems, how to talk with a person who might be experiencing a mental health problem, and strategies to help identify the next best steps. Please register online for the July 25 training session by today, July 10.

Call for updates to Cal State LA Experts Guide

The Office of Strategic Communications is updating its Cal State LA Experts Guide. This electronic guide provides a summary of the areas of expertise of Cal State LA faculty and staff who have expressed a willingness to work with the media. Journalists are often seeking experts to comment on breaking news stories in a timely manner. Please provide feedback regarding any updates or corrections on the guide to paffairs@calstatela.edu. Retired faculty may still participate. For faculty and staff interested in becoming a media source, please complete the online expert form for consideration.

The web publication showcases professional activities and publications, as well as the awards received by our faculty and staff. In Memoriam 

Ellen King Kravitz, emerita professor of music in the College of Arts and Letters, passed away on May 24, 2025. She retired in 1999 after more than three decades as a faculty member at Cal State LA. In 1976, she and her husband, Hillard Kravitz, co-founded the Friends of Music at Cal State LA to raise funds for talented music students. A graveside service was held on Sunday, June 8, at the Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles. Read more about the late professor.


Jaime Regalado, former executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs (PBI), passed away on June 16, 2025. A Cal State LA alumnus, Regalado served as professor emeritus of political science and led PBI from 1991 to 2011. Under his visionary leadership, PBI became a statewide model for nonpartisan policy research, civic engagement, and community-based dialogue. His unwavering commitment to reducing gang violence and empowering youth left a lasting and far-reaching impact across California. A private celebration of his life will be held with family. Read more about the late executive director.
