Philanthropy Trends & Updates

September | 2025

It's been a while...

One of the commitments to our community is send out e-blasts when we have stories to share. So, it's been a while since we sent you some information about North America's charitable sector and our observations on the trends in philanthropy.

In this issue you will find details of our upcoming events, an update on one of our projects and where in Canada you will find us this coming quarter.

We hope you had a good summer! Happy Reading!

GeShiDo Case Study

It's time to Get S#!t Done!

This spring, in partnership with the Tamarack Institute, and the Get S#!t Done Foundation (GeShiDo Foundation), we published a review on the state of Venture-Philanthropy in Canada.

The case study, "Transforming One Million Lives," highlights the impact that a lack of coordinated flow of large-scale and venture philanthropy has on solving complex societal issues - housing, mental health and food security.

Over the course of eight months the leadership team met with funders from coast to coast to coast to better understand what they want to see happen in Canada's philanthropic sector and what they are working towards. The findings are likely not surprising to some, and the call to action is clear - funders need to talk to each other and integrate their giving beyond grantmaking.

Rethinking Philanthropy: A New Era of Giving

Article written for Sagard Wealth.

Across North America, philanthropy is quietly transforming—and affluent donors are leading the charge. Instead of solitary giving through formal foundations, many are choosing collaborative models like Giving Circles that pool donations, amplify impact, and prioritize civic engagement.

These circles don’t just fund causes—they build communities of shared purpose. These donors aren’t just supporting causes—they’re co-creating impact. Members join forces to support grassroots organizations aligned with their values. Decision-making is democratized and issue-areas tend to be localized. Funding becomes strategic. And generosity becomes a shared experience.
