WHAT IS BRAIN HEALTH?

Brain health refers to the ability to maintain mental sharpness, enjoy memory recall, solve problems, learn easily, play, concentrate, and keep a clear, active mind. Simply put, brain health means making the most of your brain.
Want to reduce the risk of brain decline as you age?
Our brains actually shrink as we get older. At birth, the brain weighs about 400 grams. By age 25, it grows to about 1,450 grams. After that, it's all downhill. The brain loses about 2 grams per year after age 25. Studies show that brain function begins to gradually decline as early as age 30, although in some people, this decline doesn't begin until after age 50.

Staying physically active can help keep the brain healthy. But what form of exercise is best? In my 40+ years of experience, I’ve observed that my patients who dance (ballroom, jazz, square dance, etc.) tend to age the best. Dance is likely one of the most beneficial exercises because it not only requires physical exertion but also engages the brain. Dancers must think about the next step, and the opportunity to interact with others provides additional mental stimulation.
A combination of physical exercise, socialization, mental engagement, and proper nutrition and supplements provides the greatest benefit for mental health in older adults. Another exercise people often overlook is playing ping pong, which is excellent for brain health and aging.

I love having a sharp mind, but my dad passed away at age 94 and developed symptoms of Alzheimer’s in the last two years of his life. THE ROLE OF EXERCISE, NUTRITION, AND SLEEP
ENHANCING BRAIN FUNCTION

Stimulate your brain while you exercise, and make sure to work out with others. Dance is great, but other forms of exercise also fit this description. Competitive sports require socialization and mental effort, as you must interact with both your teammates and opponents while thinking about strategy.
If you walk for fitness, simply increasing your pace and challenging yourself to reach 100 steps per minute can be helpful. Changing your route can also stimulate your brain. And don’t forget to bring along a friend.
There’s something else you should know about brain health: research on diet and natural products is impressive. A diet low in saturated fats and rich in good fats, such as polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, along with protective foods containing nutrients like vitamin E and lutein, may help protect brain cells and promote brain health. Regular sleep patterns also contribute to maintaining a healthy brain.
