Temari: A Japanese Embroidery Technique - Cate Buchanan
Saturday, April 26 - Sunday, April 27, 2025
10:00am - 5:00pm
Temari (te – hand and mari – ball) is a centuries-old traditional Japanese technique of embroidery, usually done in ball form. The balls were originally made from materials at hand as playthings for children and have evolved into elaborate pieces of art that symbolize love and luck. While modern materials can be used for the art, beautiful temari can be created from humble components such as rice hulls, dryer lint and thrums from other fiber projects, making it a perfect way to create beauty from what would otherwise be trash. In this workshop, Cate Buchanan will introduce different traditional designs that can be created in this fascinating craft. Participants will be able to create two different temari during the workshop from pre-wrapped mari. Participants will also learn about making and preparing mari for future projects from different materials such as stryofoam, dryer lint and rice hulls.

Weaving with Wire with Mary Lee Hu
Friday, March 28 - Tuesday, April 1, 2025
This five-day workshop is designed to give those new to working with wire a look at a number of the many ways one can use round wire in processes borrowed from the fields of basketry and fibers. Twisting, wrapping, looping, knitting and complex braiding make textured line, and knitting, soumak, weaving and twining create flat shape or hollow form. Participants will have the opportunity to make samples of the processes demonstrated, seeing which ones they like and that they can see fitting well with their own work and working methods. Individuals who are more familiar with wire and who wish to explore specific needs or directions within the scope of wirework are welcome and there will be time to work individually with them.

Die Forming Beads Ancient Style with Jeanette K Caines
Saturday, May 17 - Sunday May 18, 2025
10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Discover the ancient art of creating hollow beads and forms! For the past four years, Jeanette has been passionately working on a project to reclaim ancient technology. Their brand-new hollow form dies, part of the Queen Puabi Collection, are now ready to make their debut in the studio. Participants will learn to use these innovative tools to craft beautiful hollow beads, just as ancient goldsmiths once did.
This process doesn't require any complex equipment like a hydraulic press—just a leather mallet, one of the dies, annealing, and 30-26 gauge sheet in copper, fine or Argentium silver, or 22k gold. Discover how simple it is to create lightweight, wearable, and elegant hollow forms. Once participants master the use of the die, they will explore fusing or soldering techniques to transform their beads into stunning pieces of jewelry.
