The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) a federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $511,480 for the 2025- 2026 academic year to improve college retention and graduation rates among low-income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities. This award marks the continuation of TRIO SSS services on the UAPB campus. Since 1985, the program has served hundreds of students, helping them stay in school, earn degrees, and build meaningful careers.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Homecoming celebration is set for October 5-11, 2025. The annual week-long experience brings together alumni, students, faculty, staff, fans from across the country, and surrounding communities.

UAPB's Homecoming continues a rich HBCU tradition with lively activities, including a parade that will feature floats and marching bands, along with concerts, Greek step shows, reunions, open houses, a golf tournament, outdoor festivals, and an exciting football game against Westgate Christian College. And we are honored to welcome Alumnus Perry Stuckey as this year's Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall.

The 2025–2026 academic year has begun, and the National Association of HBCU Title III Administrators is accepting student applications for 2025. We look forward to one of the year’s most rewarding activities: awarding annual scholarships to undergraduate students at HBCUs who submit competitive applications. The Scholarship Committee anticipates awarding between $500 and $1,000 per recipient.

It is our preference to award at least one scholarship in each of the eight regions. Last year, we awarded well over twenty scholarships and expect to award perhaps twice that number this year.

Applicants are encouraged to work closely with their campus Title III Administrator. The Scholarship Committee asks that Title III Administrators review each scholarship packet and certify that it is complete.

Important: The deadline to submit scholarship applications is Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CST. Applications must be submitted via Microsoft Forms.  Links to the application and instructions are below:

David Opiri, a senior at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, said he chose to major in nutrition and food science because of his longtime interest in the subject, which he traces back to his home country of Kenya.



“Kenya is a beautiful country with many positives,” he said. “However, like in many nations, malnutrition is a big problem in some areas. Thankfully, I grew up with sisters and a mother who love to cook and a father who is active and a sports enthusiast. I became an athlete and realized how important nutrition is for optimum performance.”

Jada Tolbert, a junior at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), has received the distinguished “Behind the Camera” Award and Scholarship from the National Arts and Letters Commission of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at the 2025 National Convention.

Tolbert, a UAPB Multimedia Communication scholar, was one of three winners nationwide of the award, which honors members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. who are making an impact through film and media while working behind the scenes to uplift and inform their communities. She shared that the recognition pays tribute to founder Osceola Macarthy Adams, a pioneer in the arts and a lasting inspiration for Black women in media, Tolbert said.

Glover, Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), has been crowned Mrs. Arkansas 2025 under the prestigious USA World Pageant Organization, a renowned platform for women’s empowerment and leadership. In November 2025, she will carry the pride of her alma mater, her students, and the State of Arkansas onto the national stage, with the opportunity to advance and represent the United States internationally.

The second annual “Feeding Brighter Futures Workshop” is set for Tuesday, September 16, at Southeast Arkansas College (SEARK). Community members are invited to join and help develop solutions for promoting healthy eating in local youth programs.

The free, public event will take place at McGeorge Hall, located at 1900 S. Hazel St. in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m.



“Feeding Brighter Futures is designed to inspire future leaders in nutrition, food science and wellness,” Dr. Kimberly Haynie, associate professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, said. “Anyone who wants to make a positive impact on our community’s health and wellbeing is encouraged to attend. It is also a chance to participate in hands-on professional development activities that will enhance your resume.”

Two students majoring in nutrition and food science at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) were recently selected to serve as research assistants for a U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) project.

Tamya Hulum and Jae’Nyla Welch are studying the medicinal properties of Arkansas rice bran cultivars under the guidance of Dr. Sankar Devarajan, associate professor and director of the nutrition and food science program at UAPB, and Dr. Shengyu Mu, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

Save the date now for the 2025 Agriculture Farm Field Day. The event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 19, at the Pearlie S. Reed/Robert L. Cole Small Farm Outreach Wetlands and Water Management Center (SFO-WWMC) on the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Farm in Lonoke, Arkansas.

The field day begins with registration at 7 a.m. and welcoming remarks at 8 a.m. Tours begin at 8:30 a.m. with the last tour leaving at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow at 11:30 a.m. The event will conclude with presentations, networking and visiting vendors until the 1:30 p.m. adjournment.
