Reflections from the Rector

Unlocking God's Kingdom

The Keys to the Kingdom

Many years ago, I traveled to San Antonio for a conference. I enjoyed the River Walk, toured the Alamo, ate some great Mexican food, and squeezed in a few workshops along the way. But after a late flight home to Philadelphia, I discovered an unfortunate souvenir: I had left my keys in Texas! Not just my car keys, either. My house key, office keys—all those little metal symbols of responsibility—were gone.

Keys carry a lot of meaning: they represent access, trust, security, freedom, and responsibility. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus metaphorically hands Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, telling him that whatever he "binds on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever he looses on earth will be loosed in heaven."

I’ve always found this passage a little uncomfortable because it sounds as though Peter—and by extension, the Church—is being given the power to decide who gets in and who stays out, like a heavenly bouncer. And sadly, Christians have sometimes used that power exactly that way: building barriers against LGBTQ+ people, divorced people, even using the Bible to uphold slavery and the segregation of people of different races.

But perhaps Jesus means something very different.

Peter—impulsive and imperfect—isn’t being handed the keys so he can become a bouncer at heaven’s gate. He’s being trusted with the responsibility of opening doors. In The Message, Jesus describes the keys as “keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth.” That sounds less like locking people out and much more like unlocking what keeps people separate.

That is the work of the Kingdom: loosening the chains of injustice, poverty, fear, racism, hunger, and exclusion. It means creating communities where people experience dignity, compassion, justice, and peace—where God’s love is not merely something we talk about, but something people can actually encounter.

So perhaps the question for us this week is simple: What door can we unlock and who might experience God’s love because we chose to open it?

Blessings,

Rev Jill
