New Genomics: Insights Articles
This month, Genomics: Insights features articles from postdoctoral fellows and high school students focusing on current areas of genomic research. The topics explored include the relationship between socioeconomic status, epigenetics and mental health, the investigation of pharmacogenomics on adverse effects, and exploring the gut-brain axis. Great inspiration for teachers or healthcare professionals exploring ways for their students to communicate and write about science topics.
Genome: Unlocking Life's Code Global DNA Day Pinterest Challenge
DNA Day 2021 is a global celebration of our shared humanity and connectivity to the natural world. We want to know what DNA Day looks like in your community. Using the power and reach of social media we have created a Global DNA Day Pinterest Challenge! The challenge is open from March 22, 2021 through May 10, 2021. Create a Board called “Global DNA Day 2021.” Include the appropriate grade level for your board in the description, e.g. grades 5-8. Pin at least one image/link/video related to celebrating genomics. Suggested topics include: Fun things to do with DNA, DNA Day programming, DNA and the arts, DNA classroom projects, DNA Day in your community. Please submit the web address of the board to unlockinglifescode@mail.nih.gov. Follow Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code on Pinterest. Top boards and awards will be announced on May 14, 2021.
Virtual Computational Genomics Conference
Computational and data science technologies are changing the landscape of genetic and genomic research. With resources like cloud computing and big data storage, scientists are able to investigate complex questions and work towards ensuring genetic and genomic advances benefit all. This workshop will feature a series of speakers sharing their expertise through use cases and discussing the funding mechanisms to support research and training programs. The keynote speaker and successive sessions will provide an overview of computational and data sciences with an outlook on where the fields are headed. Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Ancestry Testing, Identity and the Adoptee Perspective
Advances in technology have expanded the usability of genetic ancestry testing. This panel brings together adoptees with unique experiences and expertise related to this technological advancement. The Louise M. Slaughter National DNA Day Lecture Hosted by the National Human Genome Research Institute
April 25 is National DNA Day, and the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) will be celebrating in advance on April 23, 2021 with the Louise M. Slaughter National Day Lecture. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Rebecca Johnson, Member of the Order of Australia and Chief Scientist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Johnson will be speaking about her ‘DNA-driven’ science journey which includes establishing the first accredited wildlife forensic laboratory in the southern hemisphere and working on conservation genomics of some of Australia’s most iconic wildlife species.
