New from the National Science Teaching Association and the National Human Genome Research Institute: High Altitude Living Lesson Plans

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), with the sponsorship of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), has created eight lesson plans exploring genetic and genomic concepts related to genetic variation and gene-environment interactions. Lesson plan units offer an opportunity to investigate a question related to how some people can live at higher altitudes while other people get ill visiting these places.

Free NIH Web Seminars Introducing High Altitude Storyline Lesson Plans and Playlist

Interested in learning more? NSTA is offering two web seminars in August to introduce the High Altitude Living Storyline lesson plans and abbreviated lesson Playlist to educators!

For the full High Altitude Living Storyline lesson plans, register for the web seminar on Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m EDT. All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey.

If you’d prefer a shorter three-lesson High Altitude Living sequence that does not include a project, then register for the NIH Web Seminar, Genome Unlocking Life’s Code Playlist on Wednesday, Aug. 16 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Celebrate The Father of Genetics' Birthday This Month!

Gregor Mendel’s birthday is on July 20, and he is considered to be the “father of genetics” and his experiments established the basis of our understanding of biological principles such as those related to heredity. Our understanding of science, research, & ethics has grown by leaps and bounds since Mendel’s flower and pea experiments. Celebrate Mendel’s contribution to genetics by visiting NHGRI’s Talking Glossary to read, see, and hear about one of Mendel’s discoveries, Mendelian inheritance.

Application is Open for the Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genomics Scholars Program

The Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genomics (ISCC-PEG) is a collaborative group aimed at improving healthcare provider genomics education. The Scholars Program provides exposure to the broader genomics community and experts in the field, with the opportunity to work on genetics/genomics-related education projects under the mentorship of an ISCC-PEG member. The application deadline is September 1. If you meet the eligibility requirements, apply today!
