Summer Fun: Explore Our Shared Genomic Journey With This Interactive!
"In & Beyond Africa" is a thought-provoking interactive tool about human migrations in Africa and beyond over the last 200,000 years. The interactive is structured around an animated map of the world slowly revealing human migration patterns over time. Along the journey, students are encouraged to game and explore various topics on human development: from prehistoric tool-making, to the genetics of human skin pigmentation, to the domestication of crops and animals. Plus, activities about Ötzi the Iceman, and an eLearning game in which students share ideas about human life in the future are part of the fun!
Summer Reading for Students Interested in a Healthcare Professional Career
Students interested in a healthcare professional career can learn more about the challenges and approaches healthcare professionals face in answering questions about direct-to-consumer genetic testing by reading the new Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing FAQ. This FAQ was created by the Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing (DTC-GT) Project Group of the Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genomics (ISCC-PEG). The ISCC-PEG is a group of 260 representatives from societies, professional organizations, NIH institutes, and industry as well as individuals with expertise in medical education. Students can learn about what direct-to-consumer testing is, the benefits and limitations of tests and how results may affect their patients’ health, wellness, and medical decision making. The FAQ is a great way for students to learn more about how genomics is making an impact on the healthcare profession.
The National Association of Biology Teachers 2022 Professional Development Conference Registration is Open!
The National Association of Biology Teachers Professional Development Conference will be held in-person from Nov.10-13 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The conference offers field trips, workshops, special speakers, an exhibit hall and more! Early-bird registration ends on July 31.
PubMed: A Biomedical Research Tool for Students
Looking for new biomedical research tools to share with your students next school year? The National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine hosts the free PubMed search engine, which accesses a database of over 34 million citations of biomedical and life sciences. These citations are of journal articles and books. Topics can be searched and filtered according to years, text availability, article type, and publication date. Often, access to the full-text content is free and available via a link. PubMed is an amazing tool that can assist students participating in science fairs or writing science papers, with accessing historical and up-to-date articles for reference. Take the summer to familiarize yourself with PubMed and introduce it to your students next school year!
