DNA Origami: An Educational Resource for All Students

DNA is one of the most well-recognized biological structures in the known universe. Now, students can understand the actual twists, turns and rules of base-pairing by making their own 3D origami mode, created by the National Human Genome Research Institute. The origami can be downloaded and printed using a standard computer printer, and comes with folding directions. A video is also available with step-by-step instructions on how to fold the printed origami into the helical DNA shape. Do this in the classroom or assign it as a hands-on activity to do at home.

Discover Genetics with the American Society of Human Genetics

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) has a new resource, “Discover Genetics,” designed to enable people everywhere to realize the benefits of human genetics and genomics research by making human genetics research, concepts, and programs accessible. High school students can learn about the ASHG DNA Day Essay Contest, the public can learn about the basics of genomics, and connect with ASHG members willing to engage and discuss genomics in a variety of settings.
