MICA Announces Cecilia McCormick as President

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) announces Cecilia M. McCormick, J.D. as the College’s new president, following her six-month engagement as interim president. This momentous appointment of MICA’s first female president follows thoughtful consideration by MICA’s Board of Trustees and marks an auspicious next chapter of the historic art and design school. McCormick, a first generation college graduate, previously served as Elizabethtown College’s first woman president and secured financial stability and enrollment growth for the institution. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the presidential role. MICA welcomes McCormick and her husband, John, three sons, three daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren to our tight-knit community. Read more

The Suess Studios Inaugural List: Congrats to Sarah Hwang BFA '17 and Avani Dwivedi BFA '19

Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s Books (RHCB) has announced the lineup of authors and illustrators who will create the first original books inspired by Ted Geisel’s (aka Dr. Seuss) unpublished sketches and illustrations for Seuss Studios, a new line of books in the Dr. Seuss publishing program at RHCB announced in 2022. MICA students learn about racism in historic Black neighborhoods through woodworking

For the last semester, students at the Maryland Institute College of Art have been recreating architectural details that once adorned 1920s-era rowhomes in West Baltimore while learning about redlining and segregation in the process. Read more

Elizabeth Talford Scott honored throughout Baltimore

The legacy of groundbreaking artist Elizabeth Talford Scott is being celebrated around the City of Baltimore with a series of exhibits displayed at nine different sites on various dates throughout the year. “No Stone Left Unturned: The Elizabeth Talford Scott Initiative,” pulled together five museums and four university sites across the city in a unified tribute and celebration of Scott’s work. Yuecen Wang BFA '20: A Portal to the Psyche

Emerging talent, Yuecen Wang, bares her soul through her art. With a BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art and later an MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, Yuecen expresses her distinctive style garnering major attention. Her prolific output has been showcased in major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Baltimore, and London. Read more

'In perpetuity': Local artists selected to paint mayor portraits to be displayed in City Hall

Five local artists have been selected to create portraits of five Baltimore mayors for permanent display in City Hall. The selected artists were announced on the Midday radio program hosted by Tom Hall on WYPR-FM and include: Ernest Shaw, Karen Warshal (Adjunct Faculty), Kennedy Ringgold BFA '19, Megan Lewis, and Andrew Pisacane BFA '12, also known as Gaia. AICAD announces 2024/25 teaching fellows with four being MICA alumni, the highest number across all schools!

The Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) is pleased to announce the thirteen Fellows selected for the AICAD Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship for the 2024/25 academic year. Additionally, nine previous fellows will continue their positions for a second year. Read more

Stuart Cooper '72 Photography

Stuart is an accomplished filmmaker and photographer, and is the Owner/Producer/Director/Artist for the firm Cooper Productions, Inc. Throughout his success, he always credits MICA for helping him learn to work cooperatively with others on large projects and to think outside the box – two important elements of working on motion pictures. Stuart continues to be deeply involved with MICA as he currently is a member of the Board of Trustees, Legacy Society, and Alumni Committees.

In 2014, Stuart established the Stuart B. Cooper Endowed Chair in Photography to promote the teaching of still photography. His involvement helped enhance the College’s ability to recruit distinguished visiting artists while providing unique opportunities to its students that otherwise may be difficult to achieve in the absence of such a chair. He also established the Stuart B. Cooper ’72 Endowed Scholarship to provide support to students who have demonstrated high financial needs. In line with his philanthropic spirit, he requests the recipients donate a piece of work to a non-profit entity within the community. Along with establishing these funds, he continues to generously donate to MICA’s Annual Fund, as well as other scholarships.

Robert A. Zimmerman '66 Interior Design

Robert graduated from MICA in 1966 with a BFA in Interior Design and went on to have an incredibly successful career as a professional artist, but the College always remained close to his heart. Bob, as his friends and colleagues affectionately called him, heralded an incredible portfolio which included working at the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Gallery. He also designed the inaugural ball for President George H.W. Bush at the National Building Museum and was an independent florist, but he always was eager to give back to MICA. He established the Zimmerman Family Scholarship Endowment in 2014, which provides financial support to returning undergraduate students enrolled in the College’s Architectural Design program with demonstrated financial needs. Bob was a regular contributor to his scholarship and even increased the amount offered to MICA creatives via a generous planned gift bequest, generously leaving his entire estate to the College.

Debra Rubino '92 Photography

Debra has been a valued member of the MICA family since 1988. She first began working for the College as director of institutional communications and simultaneously earned her MFA in photography. She left to serve as a vice president for Goucher College where she became the first board chair of the Baltimore Collegetown Network, and then served as director of strategic communications at the Open Society Institute-Baltimore. After a long hiatus, she was asked to return to MICA as vice president for strategic communications. She continually provides critical assistance in several areas of need, including support for diversity funds, scholarships, BI-POC materials fund, Friends of Harry T. Pratt Society and the Fletcher Mackey Scholarship Fund.

Joyce J. Scott '70

Art Education

Joyce is a prolific and acclaimed artist whose work has been celebrated throughout the world and is well-known for using her art as a potent platform for commentary on social and political injustices. She has been recognized by winning several major awards including the MacArthur Fellow (2016), Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize (2016), and the Smithsonian Institution’s Masters of the Medium (2006), to name a few. Throughout her successful career, Joyce always ensured she provided guidance and help to the next generation of MICA artists. In 2017, she established the Joyce Scott Endowed Scholarship Fund which provides support to undergraduate students at MICA with financial need, with a preference for students of color from Baltimore.
