Our farm and the natural world that surrounds it is a living and breathing classroom...even in winter!
Last week homeschool students explored erosion through hands-on demonstration models, stories about the Dust Bowl, and explorations in nature to spot evidence of erosion up close and in person!
And, what better way to put lessons about healthy eating into motion than cooking? Children in our healthy cooking afterschool program made carrot ginger soup and "cake" pops from blended dates, pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate. Hands-on learning like this puts our lessons about the importance of eating plants, gut health, and our overall health to work and delivers it in a fun and interactive way for children!
We're excited to use our new education "hoop house" by engaging students in planning, growing, and caring for their "indoor" garden space throughout the growing season. Farming happens here even in winter!
As our Farm Educator Grayce put it, "Winter programming on the farm has been such a wonderful opportunity to expose students to parts of farming and ecology that they wouldn't be able to access in most other educational spaces. The farm is a wealth of natural resources that have been a joy to explore. We can't wait to see what the rest of winter has in store!"
