Hip-Hop in Hartford

Hip-hop is a global cultural movement that began in 1973 in the South Bronx, driven by African American and Latino youth. It emerged as a response to the criminalization of young people, inadequate educational support, and the neglect of their rundown housing by property owners and the New York City government.

In Hartford, hip-hop culture began to take shape in the late 1970s and early 1980s within neighborhood environments similar to the South Bronx. In 1981, a Real Art Ways (RAW) exhibition featured emerging New York City-based graffiti artists Lady Pink and Crash, who painted on the RAW State Street Hartford walls. A portion of RAW's archives have been donated to the Hartford History Center, which has collaborated with RAW to uncover images, footage, and newspaper articles that illustrate RAW's promotion of hip-hop events. Tim Wolf, formerly of Peace Train, contributed photographs, flyers, and recordings documenting the early 1980s b-boying (breakdancing) and popping communities in Hartford. We thank RAW and Tim Wolf for working with us and making these wonderful materials available to the public.

These materials were curated by HPL’s Hartford History Center and were originally presented in November of 2016 in a full exhibition.

Tree Roots and Soil: Interactions Underground!

Do you have a green thumb, or have you always wanted to be better at gardening?

Join the Garden Club of Hartford, in partnership with Elizabeth Park Gardening Club, and American botanist and author Peter Del Tredici as he discusses the fascinating world of tree root systems, their growth and development, and their symbiotic associations with soil microbes.

Del Tredici advocates a "radically practical" approach to urban plant life. What some people see as a collection of undesirable plants should be viewed as a valuable ecosystem unique to the city's hostile habitat. He is the author of Wild Urban Plants of the Northeast: A Field Guide, which catalogs and describes the many species of urban wildflowers, weeds, and other plants that flourish without human support and how they can benefit the quality of urban life.

Light refreshments will be served.

Registration is required. Please register by Friday, February 28.
