HOW MANY LODGES MADE THE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION TO START OR IMPROVE THEIR WIDOWS PROGRAM?
|
|
When a man becomes a Mason, he becomes a Brother, a member of a family with roots planted firmly in honor and tradition. As a Brother, he is tasked with caring for those members of his family who need his support the most, especially the widows of his fellow Masons.
As a Master Mason you have a special role in honoring the Masonic legacy of your departed Brethren. By keeping in touch with Sweethearts in your community you give life to the Masonic ideals of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Even more importantly, you are showing the widows of your fellow Masons that they have been, and will forever be, cherished members of the Michigan Masonic family.
Hints and tips for starting/maintaining a Sweetheart Program in your Lodge:
- Keep an up-to-date list of your widows, their addresses, and phone numbers.
- When a wife of a Mason becomes a widow, reach out to her and ask if she needs support.
- At the first opportunity present her with a widow pin & poem – provided free from the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation 800-994-7400.
- If the widow needs support that you as a lodge cannot provide, refer her to the Live Better at Home program at 800-321-9357. Live Better at Home is a FREE information and referral program providing phone consultations, tools on the web, drug discount cards and much more.
- Refer your new widow to MMCF’s Sweetheart Society, we will send her a Christmas card, spring greetings and newsletters, as well as FREE enrollment to the Live Better at Home program at 800-994-7400.
- Have at least an annual get together with your Sweethearts. Here are some other ideas from lodges:
- Annual memorial service and dinner.
- Sweethearts are invited and honored at an annual dinner where member awards are also presented.
- Sweethearts and 2-3 members of the Lodge go out to lunch at a local restaurant one time a year.
- Home visits at Christmas holidays and present widows with a poinsettia, others do their annual visit at Easter and present Easter Lilies.
- Send them a birthday card or make a birthday call.
- Making sure your widows have help keeping their driveways and sidewalks shoveled.
- Making sure your widows get invited to all open dinners and events.
- Providing your Widows rides to your dinners and events.
- Make a monthly or quarterly phone call to your Widows to check on them and offer assistance.
- Providing informational meeting.
- Ham or fruit basket at the holidays.
- Flowers for special occasions.
- Lodge of Sorrows.
- Plants at the holidays.
- Provide them a widows pin.
- Honors night.
- Regular outreach.
- Your Sweetheart may be hospitalized or wanting more information about living at the Masonic Home. Offer assistance to obtain information at 800-321-9357.
