Volunteer Meet-and-Greet for the Medieval Festival: 

If you are interested in helping organize one of our community's premier events please contact Volunteer Coordinator Pedro Suarez at psuarez09@gmail.com. Learn more about the festival and these volunteer opportunities by attending a Volunteer Meet & Greet on Friday September 13th at 6pm at 560 West 181st Street, 2nd Floor.

 

Volunteers are needed to perform the following functions:

    12 volunteers for tent set-up 6:30am - 11am

    12 volunteers for tent take-down 6:30pm-8:30pm

    6 volunteers for the information booth (2 hour shifts)

    2 hay delivery directors (the festival has a large shipment of hay coming in)

    8 volunteers for hay delivery drop-off 7am - 11am

    8 volunteers for hay delivery pick-up 6:30pm - 8pm

    8 volunteers to decorate booths

    6 volunteers to direct traffic and parking in the morning until 11:30am

    1 pro-bono graphic designer for Medieval Festival signage

Redesign Javits Using Science and Math: After the weather cancellation in the spring, it's time to redesign Javits playground! Join Dr. Leonisa Ardizzone of Storefront Science and use math, science and engineering to measure, plot and design your own improvements to our local playground. There is a 15 children capacity for this event. Pre-registration is required. Please register in advance at info@FortTryonParkTrust.org with "Register" in the subject line and in the body of the email, the parent/guardian name and the child's name and age as well as the best email address at which to reach you back. In The Headlines: Latino New Yorkers 1980-2001, Washington Heights: Columbia University and El Diario/La Prensa cordially invite you to a press conference and reception announcing the acquisition of El Diario/La Prensa's photographic archive by Columbia University's Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER), and the school's Rare Books and Manuscript Library, as well as the opening of an exhibit that features a curated selection of photographic reproductions, newspaper articles, and front pages from El Diario/La Prensa, thematically designed to highlight the Hispanic social, cultural, economic, and political growth in Washington Heights, from 1980 through 2001. Family Literacy Program at the Nagle Avenue Y: Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 5:30pm-7pm, beginning Thursday, September 19th.The goal of our program is to engage the whole family in reading , writing and art. The program consists of fun workshops where families discover exciting books together, work on creative literacy-based projects and learn games and activities that build stronger language and learning skills. The program helps strengthens community bonds and offers children and parents alike the opportunity to gain positive, memorable interactions with literacy. We also serve a free healthy dinner each night! The program is funded by the Brooke Jackman Foundation, established after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center to honor the memory of Brooke (Website). Access to Independence Seminar: The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities will be hosting Access to Independence on September 21, 2013 at the Bowling Green Park Subway Plaza. Plant Propagation Workshop with the New York Restoration Project: Learn the basics of plant propagation including taking cuttings, sowing seeds, plant divisions, and forcing bulbs. Northern Manhattan Neighbors Appreciation Day: Columbia University announces the return of the annual Northern Manhattan Neighbors Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 28th. The day begins at 11am with free food samples from local restaurants; free beverages in the pre-game picnic area; posters, magnets and other give-aways; face painting; photo ops with Roar-ee the Lion; performances by the CU band; gifts for the first thousand fans; and of course, a football game at 12:30 against Monmouth. At the Lawrence A. Wein Stadium (533 West 218thStreet, between Broadway & Indian Road.) This event is FREE to all Northern Manhattan residents. Free admission; donations accepted. 11:30am-6pm, Sunday, 9/29. ***SPECIAL NOTE*** There will be NO PARKING on Cabrini Boulevard, north of 190th Street on Sunday, to accommodate all the Medieval Festival performers, vendors and artisan parking. Please walk or use public transit; if you use the A-train consider taking it to the 181st Street stop and walking north to the park, or going to the Dyckman Street station and walking south through the park to the fair. The elevators at the 190th Street stop get rather crowded, and waits of 10-15 minutes are not uncommon during peak travel times. Flu Vaccination Clinics: Once again Senator Espaillat and other uptown elected are teaming up the the Visiting Nurse Service of New York to bring FREE 'flu vaccines to the public. Tentative dates are Thursday October 17th at a location in Inwood, and Wednesday October 23rd in Washington Heights. Details to follow, but save the dates. We are also looking into a third clinic on the Upper West Side/Manhattanville. Watch this space for details.

NoMAA Call for Artists (MJM Culture & Arts Festival): The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance in partnership with the Morris-Jumel Mansion will host the third annual Culture and Arts Festival (CAF�) on October 12th from 10am-6pm. If you are interested in promoting your art at the festival, MJM is offering musicians and artists the opportunity. The CAF� aims to create a stronger, more enriched and engaged arts community in Washington Heights. Last year's event attracted more than 700 visitors, who experienced the wide range of cultural and artistic programming offered throughout the day. Participants will be charged a booth fee for tent rent, set-up and use of facilities, but will keep 100% of the revenue made from any sales. NYC Department of Education hearings: The NYC DOE is hosting hearings with the City's 32 Community Education Councils (CECs), to obtain feedback on its final "Contracts for Excellence" plan. Under State law, "Contract for Excellence" funds must be distributed to schools to benefit students with the greatest educational needs as defined by New York State and must also be spent in six specific program areas-class size reduction, time on task, teacher and principal quality initiatives, middle school and high school restructuring, full-day pre-Kindergarten, and model programs for English Language Learners.
