MY HERO invites middle school and high school student reporters to write essays celebrating their heroes and to share their stories with our global audience. Selected winners will be considered for a special mentorship program to further their journalism and filmmaking skills and to take part in an upcoming production of The MY HERO Report: Youth Edition.

Esther Wojcicki, a renowned media arts educator, author and reporter, knows the importance of teaching and inspiring the next generation of reporters. That's why she sponsors the annual "WOJ' Youth Reporter Award. The award, which comes with $2,000 in cash prizes, celebrates student reporters, whose short films showcase heroes making a positive difference in their communities and the world. Learn more.

Sylvia Earle is a world-renowned oceanographer, author, explorer and research scientist, who has logged thousands of hours underwater and has led more than 70 expeditions. To celebrate "Her Deepness," the annual Sylvia Earle Ocean Conservation Award is presented to filmmakers who showcase heroes working to protect the world's ocean. The award comes with up to $2,000 in Cash Prizes from MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation's One World One Ocean Campaign. The Eva Haller Women Transforming Media Award recognizes outstanding short films featuring women's stories. Learn more.

Submit your short film to the 20th Annual MY HERO International Film Festival. The festival brings together filmmakers, with all levels of expertise, to celebrate local and global heroes working for positive change in the world. Prizes are awarded to elementary, middle school, high school, college and professionals in a variety of categories — documentary, narrative, music video, animation, experimental, and more. All winning films can be viewed online.

The final submission deadline is September 1, 2024, via FilmFreeway.
