October 16-19- The Kansas Downtown Symposium
Kansas Main Street programs and other downtown representatives from throughout the state are coming to Emporia! If you are a restaurant or retailer, just know that attendants will do a lot of "market research" (aka, shopping and dining). Are you interested in sponsoring activities? Do you want to get involved in the Symposium? Contact Emporia Main Street for more information!
We also have Halloween activities, Freedom Fest, Holiday Activities, the Granada Bridal and Prom Expo and a ton of other event activities with information coming out SOON.
At Emporia Main Street, we want to create situations where your business or organization can interact with potential customers or supporters. We appreciate businesses and organizations getting involved, advertising their participation through area media and taking advantage of the opportunities around them. We don't create or aid in the events listed above for US, we work hard at these events for YOU! So, please take advantage of the resources at your disposal and confirm your involvement in an Emporia Main Street activity TODAY!

Did You Know? |
Last week, we hosted a Promotions Committee Meeting, attended another successful Brown Bag event, held a Design Meeting, helped with a fun Live in the Lot, worked on the web site, received several new memberships, presented a social media work shop, met with a new local building owner, toured potential locations with an out-of-town group looking to place a store downtown... Oh yeah- and we teamed up with Jeremy Rusco of Dynamic Discs and the Emporia Convention and Visitors Bureau help announce that Emporia has been selected to host the 2013 Professional Disc Golf Association Junior and Amateur World Championship (WOO HOO!!!). Of course, exciting weeks lead to good questions from all of you!
1. "Who gets the credit for the World Championship announcement?" From an on-line question. Without Dynamic Discs and Jeremy Rusco, the PDGA World Championship could not happen. Dynamic Discs is the premier Disc Golf retailer in North America, they coordinate over 30 large Disc Golf related events per year and their expertise allows Emporia to host this event. They deserve the credit and praise for Emporia landing this prestigious event. Like many other events in town, other agencies take a support role. In this particular instance, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and Emporia Main Street met several times over the past few months and divided up tasks/responsibilities with Dynamic Discs to secure the World Championship. Jermey put together the basic event budget, course locations, course schedule and identified course officials. The CVB met with local hotels and worked to book facilities for events. Main Street collated information and put together the final bid package with information created internally and submitted by other partners in formation of the 34 page long bid document. All parties met with the Emporia Country Club and City officials to garner support and facility access. All parties met on Wednesday afternoon to get the news that we (Emporia) won the World Championship bid, and we worked together to quickly generate a press conference for the following morning. Jeremy brought Dynamic Discs materials and was the focal point of the event. Betty, Susan and Kala from the CVB secured the Country Club and contacted local officials. Main Street worked with IM Design to generate some signage (Tracy Holroyd did some awesome work very FAST), and we coordinated media, press releases and worked with partners to create a cooperative event agenda. The full CVB staff and Main Street staff worked the Glass Blown Open (although I don't know that any of us want to deal with severe weather during the event again...) So, to make a long answer short, people and organizations worked together to make this happen. The operative word is "worked". Like the DK, local car shows, Live in the Lot or a host of other events, activities can grow and become something special if the visionaries behind the event have help. Dynamic Discs is a visionary business, and we are happy to help them. Frankly, everyone has been a pleasure to work with on this project, and I'm sure we'll see a lot more of each other in the 13 months leading up to the event.
2. "Why is your site loading so slowly?" From a few calls to the office. Ah, technology... We have a wonderful new web site, but the server hosting the site was having some "issues", so we are working with a local business to take over the hosting which should increase speeds significantly. This week is full of GREAT classes! Mark your calendars for Water Wise Landscaping with Ben Stallings (only $5!) and Advanced Bike Repair with Shawn Honea, both on Wednesday, June 20. To wrap up the week, learn all about Extreme Couponing techniques with Shelley Goede on Thursday, June 21, and test your skills with a Saturday afternoon trip to the store! To enroll please visit http://flinthills.augusoft.net/ or call 341-1392.
3. "How much time do you have to spend on social media?" From an individual at a social media seminar. It really depends on the media type. This newsletter, for example, contains portions of social media. For Facebook, we generally say that you need to post a minimum of four times a week. For Twitter, you need to post a little bit more frequently. Social media isn't something that should ever take over your work day. Generally, I'm posting information while I'm also doing something else, or I'm generating a picture/file upload with information I already have (and I'm not sitting around while the files are uploading). The more important questions you should be asking are "how can social media support my brand" and "what types of social media are worth my return on investment".
4. "What's the next big event?" From a volunteer. It's awesome that people no longer ask "is there something to do" and they've moved to "what sort of huge, national event is coming to Emporia next..." Live in the Lot and Brown Bag events are big. City Band concerts on Thursday's are a fun event. Thursday night Bike Rides and Tuesday/Thursday runs with the Human Power Company are growing more popular. But, the next "Big" events are July 19 (Midnight Madness summer sale), July 27-28 Kansas Shrine Bowl, August 14 (Welcome Back Block Party) and September 8 (Great American Market). It seems like there are "Big" things going on just about every week in Emporia, but those are some of the larger events coming up.
5. "Who won the Adopt a Garden voting?" From a few garden adopters. First off, the community wins by having volunteers that help out by working in local gardens. We have three rounds of voting, and each round has a top three "winners". Once a garden has won during a round, it is ineligible to "win" in subsequent rounds for the adoption year. After each round, we reassess gardens to check for those that need additional adoption help, and we have a couple, so please contact Emporia Main Street if you are interested. The top three gardens receiving votes this round were: Don't see your name listed on the membership list to the right? Let's get you signed up as a 2012-2013 Member of Emporia Main Street. The formal portion of our Membership Drive started this week, and we are excited to show you what a membership in Emporia Main Street has to offer. A member of the Emporia Main Street Board of Directors will contact you soon! |
