Bird Walk with Joe Gyekis
Saturday, September 21, 2024
8:00 - 10:00 AM
Joe Gyekis will lead a second bird walk at ChicoryLane this year just one day before the fall equinox. It should be a good time to see some of our migrating visitors!
ChicoryLane's diverse habitat includes a forest edge, wet and dry meadows, wetlands, ponds of several types, riparian areas and several streams. In this season, Yellow-rumped, Black-and-white, Cape May, Connecticut, and other warbler species have been seen at ChicoryLane. We will be especially looking to see which food sources they use while here.
Up top, we have an area with large open sky. Looking west, you can see all the way to Boalsburg and, to the east, Harry John. There should be some Buteos and Accipiters passing over, and perhaps also a Falcon or Bald Eagle. We'll also keep our eyes open in hopes of seeing a Cooper's Hawk. Less common than the larger, more numerous Red Tails, this medium-sized Accipiter's flight pattern of flap, flap, glide may help us spot one. Or, we may spot one overnighting in the conifers below.
All areas are accessible from wide, mowed paths – flat for the Warblers, up a hill for the Raptors.
