Plein Air Drawing & Sketching

with Elody Gyekis at ChicoryLane

Saturday, September 28, 2024

10:30AM - 3:30PM

Workshop is Free

Elody Gyekis, long time visitor, photographer, painter and workshop leader at ChicoryLane, is back for a fall event. Elody will offer a full-day workshop in Plein-Air sketching and drawing. Elody is familiar with the property's vistas, nooks, crannies, and textures as potential subjects for drawing. An important theme will be drawing to see - seeing to draw, as a technique for seeing more deeply into a place and, in turn, seeing more opportunities for aesthetic renderings.

The class will sketch from nature using various kinds of charcoal and other drawing tools. You will start by exploring composition; nature is full of complex details, so your sketch will be as much about what you omit as what you include. Then you will build the atmosphere and light of a drawing, focusing on the general forms, shapes and tones. Gradually, you will explore additive and subtractive drawing techniques to carve out more and more structure, slowly moving towards the textures and select details that we wish to emphasize. MATERIALS: If you have sketching supplies, bring them if you wish. If not, materials will be available including drawing paper, vine charcoal, compressed charcoal sticks and pencils, erasers, etc. If you have a drawing board or plein air easel, bring that.

Website

ChicoryLane is an ecological reserve near Spring Mills, protected by a Conservation Easement held by Clearwater Conservancy. It is 68 acres of very diverse lands that we are actively enhancing ecologically. We hold outdoor events throughout the year.

The landscape is natural, but scenic. It includes wetlands and meadows, several streams, remnant and successional forests, and a grassland. This diversity of habitats is especially inviting to birds and butterflies. A system of mowed trails makes most of it accessible to walkers.

If you wish to visit ChicoryLane, email us a request including the time, date, and number in your group.
