Upcoming Events
District 3 Nonprofit Networking Breakfast - Tomorrow
As you may know, I've hosted biannual Nonprofit Networking Breakfasts since my first year in office. These are opportunities for nonprofit leaders working in District 3 to learn about resources available and network with others who serve the same community. During the pandemic, we've taken this event virtual and our next event will take place tomorrow, Friday, December 4, at 8:30 am.
If you work for a nonprofit organization serving District 3 residents and have not received an invitation to tomorrow's event, please email Alesha Wilson at aewilson@co.pg.md.us to request to be added to our nonprofit email list and be sure to register for tomorrow's virtual event here by 5:00 pm today.
As always, feel free to reach out to a member of my District 3 team or me if we can help you in any way. I am sharing updates regularly on social media, especially my Facebook page. #onlytogether
Holiday Joy for Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities - December 16
My office is proud to partner again with the Prince George's County Department of Family Services to distribute boxes of meals AND boxes of groceries AND a box of holiday treats (yes, THREE boxes!) to District 3 seniors age 60+ and individuals with disabilities of any age on Wednesday, December 16.
Please register today to pick up or request delivery of these boxes on December 16. This is likely the last distribution we will have as funds must be spent by December 31 for this program.
If you are not a senior or person with a disability, please urge your friends and neighbors who are to register today -- we'd like this final distribution to be our largest one yet!
We anticipate more than 200 individuals will need to have their boxes delivered. If you can help deliver to approximately 6-8 homes or apartments on the morning of December 16 please sign up here. Please note, by selecting "1" slot you are signing up to deliver to one route of 6-8 stops.
We'll also need extra hands on-site to load 3 boxes in each trunk. If you are able to help on-site at the New Carrollton Municipal Building from 8:00 am until approximately 11:30 am, please reply to this email to let us know.
Virtual Connection on Police Reform Work - December 21 Please join Maryland Delegates Erek Barron, Alonzo Washington, Nicole Williams and me on Monday, December 21, from 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm to learn more about the police reform work happening at the State and County. Register here and the link to join will be emailed to you prior to the event. New Meal Site and Partnership with Shepherd's Table
I'm so grateful to Shepherd's Table for their new "Beyond the Table" initiative in Riverdale. Shepherd's Table will be at Riverdale Elementary School every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 pm to distribute meals to those in need. All are welcome.
Leadership Updates
It was a true honor to join my colleagues to unanimously select Council Member At-Large Calvin Hawkins as our Council Chair and District 2 Council Member Deni Taveras as our Council Vice Chair earlier this week. Council Member Taveras is the first Latina to hold a top leadership position among any of our three branches of County government. I look forward to working with these two incredible leaders to continue to move Prince George's County forward in 2021. Special thanks to Council Member Todd Turner who ably served as Chair for the past two years.
I'm excited that Prince George's County Council Senior Attorney/Legislative Officer Colette Gresham has been named Associate Council Administrator for the Legislative Branch. Colette has been integral to the Council's legislative work for many years and will brings passion and expertise to this new role. Congratulations, Colette!
Congratulations also to Tara Jackson whom County Executive Angela Alsobrooks has named Acting Chief Administrative Officer for Prince George's County effective Friday, December 4. Tara takes over the role from Major Riddick who has dedicated nearly his entire professional life in service to Prince George's County. I am grateful to Major for his leadership over the past two years and very much look forward to Tara's increased leadership on behalf of our County.
Services 24/7
University of Maryland's Services 27/4 is a powerful tool with a new look and enhanced functionality. It's the same virtual resource center for nonprofits in Prince George's County, but with more features to help nonprofits, County council, and residents connect to build stronger, more connected communities.
Services 24/7 is an online directory for residents of Prince George's County looking for organizations that provide human services from afterschool programs, to housing and foreclosure assistance, to veteran services. We serve two purposes:
-
connecting the citizens of Prince George's County with the resources they need to enhance their quality of life and
-
connecting the vast human resource of volunteers in our county to nonprofits in order to increase their capacity to serve.
Through their new partnership with GivePulse, the site has an added benefit of allowing nonprofits to track volunteering hours/impact, post volunteering events directly. Learn more.
As always, feel free to reach out to a member of my District 3 team or me if we can help you in any way. I am sharing updates regularly on social media, especially my Facebook page. #onlytogether
