Chapter Spotlight

Event Video: "The Wisdom of Politicians" with Peter Calcagno
AIER's Bastiat Society of Dallas hosted Dr. Peter Calcagno to speak about issues with public funding and subsidies for businesses. Dr. Calcagno is a Professor at the College of Charleston and Director of the Center for Public Choice & Market Process.

The chapter recorded the entire talk for you to watch at home. Watch the full talk here.

State and local officials regularly steer public funding / subsidies to politically favored companies and industries to encourage investment in their communities. These officials believe the subsidies help companies create jobs, income, and tax revenues that are essential to the community's economic and social well-being.

But are they right? Should politicians really be picking winners and losers in the business community? Are we, in fact, getting the outcomes they promise?

Watch Dr. Calcagno's recorded talk.
New Chapter: The Bastiat Society of Kenya
We are excited to welcome our newest chapter to our international network! Our 36th chapter worldwide and 2nd chapter in Africa just opened in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Bastiat Society of Kenya is led by Belinder Odek, businesswoman and CEO of Young Africans For Opportunities. Through AIER's Bastiat Society program and its partnership with YAFO, her chapter will work with businessmen and women in Kenya to help them learn about and appreciate the principles of a free society.

Belinder hopes to enlighten and lift people out of poverty, with a goal of at least 500 individuals every year. She will accomplish this by teaching principles of a free society and sharing opportunities that people can leverage to learn business and sell their products and services.
