A vibrant community meeting, led by Sean Chavez, brought together residents, nonprofits, and city representatives this week to share updates, celebrate local strengths, and dive deep into the future of Downtown Oceanside.

Cathy Nykiel shared exciting details about the upcoming A Sublime Life Sobriety Festival, scheduled for May 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event promises two stages of live entertainment, with posters and promo cards now available at MainStreet Oceanside. Nykiel encouraged community members to spread the word and highlighted opportunities for sponsorship, volunteering, vendor participation, and local artist involvement.

Additional announcements included:

• Assemblywoman Davies is hosting a Senior Scam Stopper Summit this summer at El Corazon.
• Oceanside Pacific Kiwanis Club has two meetings supporting Meals on Wheels and Brother Benno’s at Broken Yolk, and a donation drive with Stand Up for Kids on July 8.
• Oceanside's AARP Age-Friendly City Action Plan has three remaining public planning sessions.
• The California Surf Museum event calendar includes a tourism-focused event on May 14 and a surf film night with live music on May 21.
• Whitlock Surf Experience is celebrating its 25th anniversary with camps for all ages.
• The final Oceanside Transit Center Environmental Impact Report will be released soon.
• The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce has three events coming up: Operation Appreciation on May 17, the new Coastal Business Expo on June 18, and a chamber-organized eight-day tour through Scotland in October.
• Bike Anywhere Day is May 15, with two city-sponsored pit stops open from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Following announcements, Chavez launched the Community Voice workshop — an interactive session that asked attendees to share their views on Oceanside’s current strengths, concerns, and opportunities.

The workshop fostered constructive dialogue, with participants showing a shared desire to protect Oceanside’s unique character while embracing thoughtful progress.

The evening wrapped with optimism, a shared commitment to community-led change, and a clear reminder: Oceanside’s future is strongest when built together.

This workshop marked Part 1 of an ongoing dialogue. The ideas, feedback, and concerns shared will be revisited and expanded upon during Part 2 of the Community Voice session at the June meeting. Community members are encouraged to return and continue shaping the vision for Downtown Oceanside.
