"Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier."
~Mother Teresa
Greetings!
Happy Birthday, America!
The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 political leaders in 1776, documenting America's independence from Britain. Many centuries later, we are still celebrating this momentous occasion, but as we celebrate America this month, let's also not forget community members that are marginalized and victimized based on race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. For the past 28 years, SAHARA's mission has been to empower these marginalized communities and help them thrive. The history of SAHARA may not be as colorful as America's, but it is undoubtedly more compassionate and kinder!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Today the Shelter is filled to capacity, and many more community members find help here. SAHARA is looking for 25 extraordinary individuals for a special team - you may qualify.
  • Are you focused and well-organized?
  • Do you care about your community?
  • Does getting a free ticket to the most happening gala of the year excite you?
  • Are you fun, outgoing, and love to smile?
  • Would you enjoy mouth-watering South Asian food from one of the best restaurants in the area?
  • Do you want to be a part of a 28-year-old organization that has worked tirelessly to help the South Asian Community?
If you answered yes to all these questions, then we would love for you to join the Valued Volunteer Team for SAHARA's 28th Annual Gala, "Empowering Our Community" on Sept. 14th, 2019. Preparation and training begin in August.

SAHARA'S SOUL STORIES
Grab a cup of hot chocolate and warm your soul with stories from community members that SAHARA works with
70-year-old, MD called SAHARA as he needed help. He was living in a shelter and had been physically assaulted and mentally tortured numerous times. Most of his possessions were stolen, including all his documentation. He had been in the US for about 20 years but wasn't sure of his status. We set up an appointment with him, and he called us while at the bus stop as he didn't know what to do or where to go. We talked him through the whole trip, and finally, he was able to arrive at SAHARA. When MD came in, it had been 15 years since he last visited India and he wanted to go now. Working with him, we were able to get copies of all his documents and realized that he was a Lawful Permanent Resident. Once we sorted out his paperwork, SAHARA was able to assist him in filling out his citizenship forms and helped him qualify for a fee waiver that saved him $725. Also, because he qualified for a Medical exemption, he didn't have to do the Naturalization Test.
Eventually, MD was able to become a citizen and go back to India after 15 years!
