Age Friendly Cities Zoom with Anabel Pelham

This summer Daly City was one of the first cities in San Mateo County to be designated an age-friendly community by the World Health Organization (WHO). This step was the culmination of a two-year effort supported by San Mateo County, AARP and the Center for Age-Friendly Excellence (CAFE) that was announced in August 2018. The World Health Organization established the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities to connect organizations worldwide with the common vision of making their community a great place to grow old in as a response to global population aging. It focuses on action at the local level that fosters the full participation of older people in community life and promotes healthy and active aging. 

Anabel Pelham, Ph.D. is president of the National Association of Professional Gerontologists (NAPG) and emeriti professor and founding director of the Gerontology Program at San Francisco State University. She is also Founding Director of the Center for Age-Friendly Excellence (CAFE), a project of the Los Altos Community Foundation and a past member of the Foundation's Board of Directors. CAFE provides technical assistance to cities and communities to become Age-Friendly.

Join us for this inspiring and informative opportunity to hear directly from Dr. Pelham about Age-Friendly Communities. She will make a brief presentation followed by a question and answer session. Daly City and Pacifica residents will especially want to meet Dr. Pelham at this online event as will our neighbors in Colma who are preparing their application for Age-Friend Cities designation.
"Let's Talk" (formerly "Stages") is a wonderful online discussion group just for seniors. This week's topic is "turning points." All seniors (55+) are welcome! Join us on Zoom using the following instructions.

To join us on Zoom using a Computer, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android or smartphone device with your camera and speak volume on:

This option enables you to see, hear, and be seen and heard by everyone in the meeting. Click here if you would like to watch a short video by AARP on how to use ZOOM. You can watch the entire video or simply start at the 1:10 mark for advice on the easiest way to join our group discussion.  The video will show you how to make sure we can hear you and, if your device has a camera, to see you.  
 
To join a Zoom meeting using only a traditional/landline telephone or cell phone: 
  1. On a telephone, dial (669) 900-6833. 
  2. At the prompt, enter the Zoom Meeting ID provided by the facilitator of the meeting and press #. The Meeting ID is:  860 9657 6329.  If the meeting has not started, you will be prompted to stay on the line until the meeting begins. 
  3. If prompted for a Zoom Meeting Passcode, enter: Stages
  4. To disconnect from the meeting, hang up the phone. 
This option works like a teleconference. You will be able to talk and hear everyone in the meeting.

Daly City Recreation is looking for Haunted Trunks, Art Cars, and Costumed Caravans! Now is time to dress up your VW Bug to be a CREEPY CRAWLY CRITTER! Time to put that mini-van in a MoooMooo and dress it up as a COW!

We are modifying "Trunk or Treat" -- one of our favorite Halloween holiday events -- to be a drive-thru this year by making it a low contact event. To reduce physical contact with our guests, at the end of the tour we will give them a goodie bag.

Register you and your "haunted trunk" to enhance "Trunk or Treat" and we will save you a parking spot! We are asking that Haunted Trunk participants show up between 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm to get into their assigned parking spot. We will be assigning the parking spots keeping each vehicle socially distanced from other vehicles. We ask that you be ready to spook out our guests by 6:30 pm.

We normally serve over 400 kids each year at "Trunk or Treat" each year and in this current situation we still want to keep the event free to the public. We would love it if the Haunted Trunk participants could donate candy, toys, or other Halloween treats for us to add to the goodie bags. If you would rather make a financial donation to offset the cost of events like this it would be BOOOO-tiful!

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 4, 2020. Remember to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed. And, when you have a chance, remember to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and the supplies in your emergency kits!
