The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center is pleased to present "Memories Interlaced" an exhibition by renowned artist Andrea Arroyo, from Arroyo's exhibit marries the elegant historical venue with bright contemporary art. The female-centered works are placed amid the striking plaster garlands, cherubs, and marbleized columns of the restored Audubon Ballroom - the Thomas Lamb classic built in 1912 and the site of the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965. Arroyo uses garments collected from women in the community, such as a Mexican huipil and an Indian prayer shawl to examine notions of memory, belonging, and body image and to honor the resilience of the female spirit.

Typhoon Haiyan was one of the worst, most destructive storms ever. While the death toll is not as high as initially feared, the number displaced and endangered by lack of food, water, shelter, medical aid and basic sanitation is in the millions. The geography of the Philippines and her many islands makes relief particularly difficult. There are many worthy aid organizations; two that come to mind are the International Red Cross (http://www.icrc.org/eng/) and Doctors Without Boarders (https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/), or click here for more suggestions on how you can stretch your hands across the globe to help: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/11/12/244702268/typhoon-haiyan-how-to-help.
