Celebrating Pastors Alyssa & Kalina

As you are hopefully aware, ODC is in the midst of a significant change within the Pastoral Team. As we welcome new people into the ODC Pastoral Team, please take the time to thank the clergy members that are moving on to new appointments. The Open Doors Community will be holding two separate farewell events:

Pastor Kalina Malua Katoa

Pastor Kalina’s celebration will be held at Trinity UMC on June 4th from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. Please feel free to come to Trinity's worship service which begins at 9AM. If you would like to send a note or gift to Pastor Kalina, please direct it to the Trinity UMC:

ODC Needs Volunteers

ODC is looking for two individuals to serve on its Board. The first opening is for the Chair of the ODC Trustees and the second is for ODC Treasurer. If you are interested in knowing more about either of these positions, please reach out to Margaret Gander-Vo at [email protected] or to one of the ODC Representatives for your campus.

End of Life Planning Seminar

End of Life Planning Seminar (Planning Now for Later)

Saturday, June 10, 2023 - 10:30 am - 2:30 pm

Morningside will be hosting an end of life planning seminar organized by the Morningside Foundation Committee on June 10, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM in the Morningside sanctuary. Box lunches will be provided.

Speakers have been scheduled around Oregon’s new advance directive and how to fill out the forms; 23 (at least) questions to ask before someone dies; and planned giving and basic information about probate. Also, a representative from Golden’s Funeral Service will be discussing information needed by the funeral home.

The seminar is geared towards people making end of life decisions and families tasked with carrying out those decisions. Oftentimes, families are left with unanswered questions that can add stress during a difficult time. This seminar is intended to provide background on end of life specifics and to generate discussions within families to provide an easier transition during an emotional time.

We expect this will be a time for learning new things and sharing experiences. Because handouts and lunch will be provided, it is important that we know the number of attendees.  To register or ask questions, please call MUMC at 503-364-5013 by June 1st (voice mail messages are fine). If you have a food preference (gluten free and/or vegetarian), please also include that information when you register.

Music in Bloom Concert

Music in Bloom Concert

Saturday, June 17, 2023, 2:00 PM

Morningside UMC Sanctuary

Mark your calendars for Morningside UMC's “Music in Bloom” FunRaiser, June 17th at 2:00 PM, in the Morningside UMC Sanctuary. We are suggesting a donation of $10 per person or $20 per family. No tickets will be sold in advance.

Music is a kind of garden which can be viewed and heard any season, anytime, anywhere. Each note is like a seed ready to be planted into a concoction of song. These songs blossom through the sounds of voices and musical instruments.

Come and join us for a celebration of music followed by a reception in Herrmann Hall. For more information contact Pastor Alyssa or Sharon Cooper or send an email to the church at [email protected].

A Cascadia District Project

Have you heard? The Cascadia district is being encouraged to celebrate the Resurrection by giving the gift of life to others in a very practical way through donations of food and household items.

One specific ask is for local congregations to collect toilet paper throughout the month of May.

If the district is able to collect 4,000 rolls of toilet paper between now and May 28th, Cascadia District's District Superintendent, Rev. Wendy Woodworth will do something dramatic with her hair for viewing at Annual Conference in June. In addition to making a difference in the life of others, seeing what she does is quite motivating!

Please drop off your new packages of toilet paper at the food collection station at your church or at the church office during office hours. Call your church office to identify times for weekday donations. Help us reach the goal!

Thank you for your generosity during this Eastertide season.

CAMPING

Hello Youth Friends! (I’m borrowing a phrase our friend Kift always liked to use!)

As you can see, the UMOI Camp dates are up and registration is active. I hope that your summer schedules will allow you to participate in one of the Summer Camp experiences this year. I am hopeful your families will be able to take advantage of the opportunity, so please keep these thoughts in mind …

  • We have money available to help with camp registration fees! Any Open Door Churches youth participant in one of our Conference Summer Camp experiences can receive a 50% Scholarship from the Youth Fund just by asking. And, if you need more help, please contact me so I can help find a way to make this happen.
  • I am hoping to work at one of the camps where some of our youth are going, so please let me know what camp you’re hoping to attend. I want to support our youth and their families with my time this summer.

I’ve included my contact information below, so please get in touch!

Grace and peace,

Pastor John
