National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS
Sunday, March 2 through Sunday, March 9

Click here to download a PDF of prayers which you can pray through the week!

The Allen Temple AIDS Ministry invites everyone to join them in participating in The National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is an annual HIV awareness campaign that mobilizes faith communities; and highlights the contributions and impact congregations are making in areas of HIV prevention, testing, direct service, advocacy and community engagement.

Now in its 25th year, The National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS (formerly known as The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS and The Harlem Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS) is the forerunner of all national HIV awareness campaigns in the US.

This national faith mobilization campaign continues to call men and women of faith to prayer and to take aggressive action in dismantling AIDS stigma; to model unconditional love and compassion to all persons living with and affected by HIV; to disseminate factual HIV education and to engage communities in HIV testing and treatment services.

The National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is a call to prayer for the eradication of HIV/AIDS through prayer, education, advocacy and service. It is the coming together of all people of faith to unite with purpose, compassion and hope to do the following:

  • Educate every American about AIDS facts;
  • Encourage and support HIV Testing;
  • Advocate for the availability of compassionate care and treatment for all those living with the disease in every community in America and;
  • Love, unconditionally, every person living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.

Second Friday Evenings at 6:30pm
J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Fellowship Hall

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

The Junior Deacons Ministry is a sub ministry of the Allen Temple Baptist Church Deacon Ministry. Our purpose is to spiritually grow boys into men through Fellowship, Bible Study, and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Junior Deacons Ministry is holistic; we are

concerned about the whole person, and look to enhance educational growth, social relationships, and community involvement through participation in Sunday church services, monthly meetings, and periodic field trips to cultural events, sporting events, museums, and other venues.

We encourage all families with boys and young men between the ages of 8 - 18 to join the Junior Deacons Ministry.  The Allen Temple Junior Deacons meets on the second Friday of each month at 6:30pm in the J. Alfred Smith, Sr. Fellowship Hall. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Bill Morse at morse.william@yahoo.com or Deacon Rob Buckner at robjam2@comcast.net.

Family Life Center Dance Studio

As a ministry, we worship through movement, we learn different dance techniques, we minister through dance, and most importantly, WE HAVE FUN!  For more information, contact Sis. Andrea Spearman at PraiseDancers@allen-temple.org.
Nursery Ministry Workers Needed!  Help Us Reopen The Nursery!
Are you called to work with nursery aged children (four and below)?  Come work with the Allen Temple Nursery Ministry!  We serve during Sunday worship services in the Family Life Center. Even one worship service period per month can make a difference; it will help us to reopen our Nursery and serve our youngest Church family members!  For more information and to sign up, contact Dea. Leslie Allison at allison2@llnl.gov, or Rev. Dr. Brenda Guess at bguess@allen-temple.org.   A background check is required prior to beginning work.
Streets Disciples/For Sisters Only
Donations and Volunteer Appeal

The Streets Disciples Ministry's For Sisters Only Monthly Fellowship provides a place for women to be safe, nurtured, and to grow in themselves and the Lord.  During the third Saturday evening fellowship, women who have experienced exploitation are offered care, support, guidance, and resources.  We need your help to ensure that this fellowship can serve as many women as would like to come!  Would you prayerfully consider the following:
  • Volunteer:  Setup, serve, cleanup.  Persons with sewing, knitting and crocheting skills to share and/or teach.  Clerical and technical support.
  • Donations:  The ministry joyfully receives donations of cold weather accessories for ladies and children (gloves, hats, scarves, mittens; may be new or clean & gently used), toiletries, towels, sheets, pillowcases, and gift cards for food or non-perishable items. Donations are given to the ladies at the monthly fellowship, and may be made to the barrel in the FLC Lobby at any time.

For more information, please contact Sisters Mattie Johnson and Sheila Warren, Ministry Chairs, at (510) 544-8910.

Prison Ministry Volunteer Drive

"Remember those in prison, as if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated, as if you felt their pain in your own bodies."
(Hebrews 13:3 NLT)

WE NEED YOU!

The Allen Temple Prison Ministry has been a staple of our church for over 35 years.  We are seeking members as young as 18 who have a heart for those who are in prison.  We regularly take our ministry to Santa Rita Jail, Glenn Dyer (Alameda County Jails) the Federal Correctional Institute (FCI), and San Quentin.

We are also in need of a pianist or musician, singer(s) and/or a musical group.

Our meetings are the Second Saturday of each month in Family Life Center Room C213. We welcome you to become an active and vibrant part of this ministry.  If you are not sure come out anyway and check us out.  God may be leading you to work on His behalf in this way.  Looking forward to seeing you!

For more information about the ministry, please contact Rev. Dr. Malvina Stephens at (510) 893-4476.

Church Library Committee Seeks Volunteers

Are you seeking a place to serve?  The Church Library Committee is seeking committed workers for the Family Life Center Library!  Our goal is to make our library the study center for the church!

Staff is needed to keep the library operating.  At the present time, we are not open as often as we need to be.   Whether you have library skills or simply a willing spirit, we welcome you!  Come praise God by using your talents with us!  Contact Sister Eva Turner at
(510) 597-0113.
Persons With Disabilities Ministry

Come join us at the Persons with Disabilities Ministry as we strive every month to make Allen Temple Baptist Church accessible to everyone!  We want to ensure that the sanctuary is accessible and accommodates people with disabilities, educate our faith-based community partners and friends about the disability community, and encourage the congregation to recognize people for their abilities rather than their disabilities.  We also want to ensure that qualified individuals with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to participate and benefit in worship services, events and programs, as well as develop awareness on how to interact and assist people with disabilities.   Your input on these subjects will be much welcomed.   We meet on the fourth Monday of each month from 6pm to 8pm in Family Life Center Room D-104.

Prayer Warriors
Tuesdays ~ 11:30am to 12:30pm

The Prayer Warriors meet every Tuesday in the Family Life Center Prayer Room (first floor) from 11:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m.  Remember the hour and pray with us; the door is always open; if you can't come, join us in prayer wherever you are.

Do your family members, your neighbors and your co-workers know you as a Christian who is willing to share the Good News of Jesus Christ?

Do you know it is every Christian's mission to go into the world and win souls to Christ?

  • The Evangelism Ministry is in partnership with Soldiers Against Violence Everywhere (S.A.V.E. We meet at their selected location every Saturday at 11:00am and leave at or about 12 Noon.

Embodied Spirits:  Stories of Spiritual Directors of Color
Featuring Allen Temple's Own Minister of Spiritual Life Rev. Ineda Adesanya
 Click here to visit the Cokesbury website for pre-ordering information

Embodied Spirits:  Stories of Spiritual Directors of Color is an anthology that will be published by Christian Publishing, Inc. (aka Morehouse Publishing) in March 2014. Allen Temple's own Rev. Ineda Adesanya, Minister of Spiritual Life, is the author of Chapter Seven.

Embodied Spirits, a solid new addition to the Morehouse collection for spiritual directors, is the first book addressing the concerns and issues of people of color in spiritual direction and has a wide ecumenical appeal.

"These essays speak of how we have incorporated our contemplative practices into our family life; our urban, non-religious background; how we have been nurtured in struggles for health and life through our contemplative prayer practices and our courage to survive and even thrive in the midst of dire circumstances. We speak of the unfolding bridge between faith and culture; our conflicts with an Interspiritual journey with a Christian foundation; our sexuality; our journey to healing and authenticity; and how we are taking this practice that began in the first centuries of the church with the desert mothers and fathers to the present and into the future with spiritual direction through the Internet across the world." - from the Introduction
