A Letter from the Director...
Writer, Margaret J. Wheatly, once said, "There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about." It is obvious by the number of library supporters that attended the Upper Nazareth Township meeting on November 20, that our community cares about the library. Voices become loud and confident when a community is empowered. The library community is empowered! Thank you for voicing your opinion in opposition to the Upper Nazareth Township library budget proposal to cut $50,000, sharing personal stories of library experiences, inquiring about the proposed cuts, and donating funds for yard signs and newspaper ads.
It is important to recognize that our fight is not over.
The final decision to pass a $50,000 decrease in the library funding will take place on December 18th. There is still time to contact the township supervisors at 610-759-5341. The largest impact on the decision makers will be a large supporting body at the next Upper Nazareth Township meeting on December 4th at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the township building at 100 Newport Ave. Community participation will make a difference.
The community should know that library services will be reduced if this budget is passed. This reduction will affect all library users, not just Upper Nazareth Township. However, if the proposed budget is passed, it is certain that Upper Nazareth Township residents will lose certain library privileges. The reduction in privileges may include participation in the summer reading program and access to the library collection and programs.
The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity is a pillar of community service. The investment in the library is a direct reflection of community priorities that are dedicated to improving the lives of our children and neighbors. Join our fight, help protect the sustainability of Nazareth's community living room. See you on December 4th!

We are proud to announce that we earned a Gold Star rating by offering a wide array of programming and services to the Nazareth community in 2019. The Pennsylvania Library Association presented this award to MLNV on November 18, 2019. The PA Forward program sponsors the Gold Star award; PA Forward is a Pennsylvania Library Association initiative that is partially funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education through th
e Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, Governor.
PA Forward operates on the belief that "libraries have moved far beyond just being book repositories. They are agile institutions serving real-life needs. Libraries are the key to powering progress and elevating the quality of life in Pennsylvania by fueling the types of knowledge essential to success: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy." (Source:
paforward.org)
Throughout the year, MLNV worked hard behind the scenes to ensure that we provide our patrons with events and programming that promote the five literacies highlighted by the Pennsylvania Library Association. By providing these programs, the MLNV hopes to continue to aid the citizens of our community in their everyday endeavors. The MLNV will enter into 2020 with our Gold Star Library status with absolute pride as we continue to keep the members of our community at the focus of our organization's mission.

Kaelan Ellis, Library Page
Kaelan is one of the Library's three new Pages; Kaelan started working during the summer, and is currently a sophomore at Nazareth Area High School.
Kaelan has been coming the library for as long as she can remember, "I would go to story time with Miss Catherine when I was little...I enjoyed Reading to the Pups and all of the Summer Reading Kick-Off parties."
Her favorite aspect of the library now is how she's "able to come in and study or do my homework and there are a lot of options where I can do that: the quiet study room, reference area, and YA room. Even if I didn't work here, all of the programs would still bring me to the library, such as the Teen Advisory Board."
In her spare time, Kaelan enjoys playing tennis for Nazareth as well as hanging out with her friends. Her favorite book is "Me Before You," by JoJo Moyes, because "her writing is so easy to follow and once you start the book you don't put it down until you're done. You gain attachment to the characters and you're taken on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the entire story."
Following high school, Kaelan plans to go to college to study occupational therapy with a possible minor in Psychology.

Ways YOU Can Support the Library

Support a Fully-Funded Library
As you are undoubtedly aware, Upper Nazareth Township (UNT) is proposing a $50,000 slash to the library budget. This will create irreparable damage to the services to not just Upper Nazareth Township residents, but for all patrons who utilize our resources and services.
We are asking that you please oppose this budget cut for the sake of the entire community by...
- Voicing your concerns at the next UNT Supervisor Meeting on Wednesday, December 4th. (ANYONE can speak, you do not have to a UNT resident), or simply attend the meeting, showing a united front is powerful!
- Posting to the UNT Facebook Page (if you cannot post on the page, please post a review).
- Calling the Township Office (610-759-5341).
- Emailing the Township Office (secretary@uppernazarethtownship.org, UNTW@RCN.COM)
SHARE this information with other community members,
remember, their cut will hurt EVERYONE!

(For Patrons 18 Years and Older)
Book Reading, Talk & Signing
with Mike Greenblatt, Author of
Thursday, January 9th ~ 6:30-7:30pm
The year was 1969. Richard Nixon was in the White House. Neil Armstrong was on the Moon. And revolution was in the air. In that backdrop, 500,000 young people gathered on a mid-August weekend in upstate New York for the promise of three days of peace and music. What they experienced at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair was something far greater. Mike Greenblatt knows. He was there!
Join us for the evening while Mike talks about the book, the experience, and the long-lasting cultural ramifications of the event. Following a time of Q&A, he will be signing books (books will be available for sale at the event).
NOTE: Due to the nature of the book's subject and subsequent discussion,
this program is intended for mature audiences (ages 18 years and older only).
