Informational Sessions: FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps (virtual)

In conjunction with Flood Safety Awareness Week (March 9 - 15), the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, is hosting three free webinars focused on FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps.


The webinars are for local Emergency Management Directors, and each webinar is for a specific location, it is not a webinar series.

Webinar: Model Zoning for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs (virtual)

Please join the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC), and the Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) for guidance on regulating Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in accordance with Section 3 of the Zoning Act. Staff will present Model Zoning for ADUs and offer suggestions to guide local decision-making.


The webinar will discuss different approaches so zoning language can be tailored to the individual community’s needs and local conditions.

Webinar: Integrating ADUs in Historic Communities: Policy, History, and Practice (virtual)

Join the Eastern Massachusetts Historical Commission Coalition (EMHCC) for a discussion on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in historic landscapes.


This session will explore the role of ADUs in historic communities, covering planning considerations, their historical presence, and examples of communities successfully integrating ADUs while maintaining historic character.


The program will include:

  • An overview of ADU planning and policy by MAPC experts.
  • A historical perspective on ADUs from Jim O’Connell, author of The Hub’s Metropolis.
  • A presentation from the Salem Historic Commission on their approach to ADUs and historic preservation.
  • A moderated Q&A session.
