We gathered around the fire pit as sunlight turned to cerulean blue, feeling nourished by Nyema’s “Soul food” home cooked dinner of cornbread, greens, baked chicken and carrots. We recalled the words of the gospel that Michael had just shared from John, when Jesus asks the people to sit down and receive the loaves and fishes in abundance. |

When we began planning a farm to table liturgical dinner, we had memories of last year at this time in September, when rain turned the West Seattle Stairway Walk into a puddle jumper. But for Heart of the Table, it was one of those last summer evenings that you want to savor every inch of – when there is equal part warmth to cool breeze and you begin to sense that fall is coming.
“When we look into the heart, May our eyes have the kindness And reverence of candlelight.”
Malcolm read these words from John O’Donohue’s To Bless the Space Between Us. We each held candles and recalled someone who brings light into our lives. The fire crackled through compostable plates tossed in from dinner. Anna tended the embers as we continued conversation and joined in one last song, a folksy bluegrass rendition of Amazing Grace with pops and snaps from Julia’s banjo. Just when we thought we were one and out, Jeff led us in another verse.
In the fading of summer comes the new beginnings of fall and a time of harvest. From Evensong and Tacos to Pop-Up Bilingual Night Prayer, we hope you will come and share in the abundance.
