Historic Walk Planned at Springfield Union Cemetery - Springfield
Saturday, July 21
11 am - 3 pm
Springfield Union Cemetary
Union Cemetery Road, Springfield
(262) 745-4377
In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, a Historic Cemetery Walk and Re-enactment at the Springfield Union Cemetery will be held Saturday, July 21 from 11 AM to 3 PM. The event is sponsored by The Walworth County Genealogical Society and the Springfield Cemetery Board.
The public is invited to step back in time to remember the families and honor the veterans of the Springfield area. The cemetery is located on Highway 120 North at Hospital Road, just north of the village of Springfield. Visitors are asked to use the entrance on Highway 120. The event is free of charge.
At the 11 AM opening ceremony, Deb Ketchum, president of the WCGS, will welcome the first visitors; a short history of Old Abe, mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Eagle Regiment, will be presented; and the Gettysburg Address will be read. After that, groups will be guided to selected grave sites where costumed portrayers and descendants of the families will tell the stories of early settlers and veterans of the War of 1812, Civil War, World Wars I and II, and Korea.
Many of the families buried in the Union Cemetery settled in Lyons Township, Walworth County before the railroad platted the village of Springfield in 1855. Early residents remembered during the walk represent the Weeks, Olp, Gott, Webster, and Malsch families. Nathan Chappel fought in the War of 1812. Martin, Levi and Theo Weeks, Charles Harms, Henry Olp, JN Webster and JW Beeman all survived their service in the Civil War, returning to Springfield for the remainder of their days. Flags mark the locations of at least 30 other veterans' graves including members of the Johnson, Purington, Wernicke, Schinke, Peters, and Hicks families.

Then everyone pitches in to clear the table and wash dishes 19th-century style to end a satisfying encounter with morning in 1880s Wisconsin.
