Kula Club is hosted by Mrs. Natalie Hayes-Scott (pictured on the right). She is a former science teacher of Asbury Park School District. She loves to create a fun and safe space for teens to visit and form a relationship with nature.

Kula Club, Ages 12 - 16

A few times a month on a Thursday afternoon we invite local teenagers to come hang out at the Farm after school. We’ll be in the heated greenhouse if it’s cold, or outside in the gardens if it’s nice out. We’ll do some work and you might learn something new. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Doors open at 3:30pm, we’ll start at 4:00pm and finish around 5:30pm.

Saturday, May 6, 11:00 - 12:30am

There’s abundance all around us. This workshop will go over the many wild edible and medicinal plants that can be found right in our backyards that can be harvested. We will talk about how to do this sustainably and responsibly while also keeping in mind which wild plants to avoid.

Composting Workshop

Saturday, May 13, 11:00 - 12:30am

Come find out how to use free or low cost materials to supply your soil with more nutrition, beneficial microbiology, and water holding capacity. You’ll learn how to build and maintain a compost heap the right way and reap the many benefits of on site composting.

We will also dive into vermiculture/worm farming and take a look at how worms could be a great addition to your gardening efforts.

All About Birds

Saturday, May 20, 1-3pm

The Kula Bird House

Vance Sicherman

In this class you’ll learn all about birds and have the opportunity to build a Bird House.

We’ll start the class with a talk from Vance Sicherman, who is a local bird enthusiast. He’ll teach you all about birds and will be able to answer all your bird questions.

Optionally, you can stay to build a bird house after the class.

You can purchase the Bird House Kit for $20.- in our online store. It will be made out of a single wood board, that will be precut in the right sizes for you. All further necessary tools and materials will be provided.

You can build it all by yourself, or bring a friend to help you. Four hands will make it easier than two. We’ll also be there to assist. Minors should be accompanied by an adult.

The class is free, the bird house kit is optional, you can buy the kit in our online store until May 19.

“Hi! My name is Joi Lacono. I am a former public school art teacher with a passion for teaching, creating and sharing the joy of art. April Highlights

We were lucky that Farmer Nick selected us for a donation by Fiskars! They even came over to volunteer for the day to help get our gardens ready. In addition to a lot of great tools they gave us $15.000 which will be put to good use! And as a cherry on top Espoma Organic joined in and donated some great organic fertilizers.

Apart from garden tools Fiskars also pledged to supply kitchen ware to outfit our future kitchen for our farm to table dinners, a lot in the works...

Chris provided another inspiring talk on business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

The Sisters Academy returns for Fridays in the Garden. We are so happy to once again host students from the Sisters Academy. We love engaging with them in all aspects of the farm from seeding, transplanting, composting, harvesting and of course eating.

Many thanks to Jason Goldman for sharing his knowledge of Native Plants and Ecology with us on Earth Day! What a great group we had.

The Asbury Park Restaurant Tour was as busy as EVER! We met so many wonderful folks and shared our annual foraged pesto and herb tea. Lori did great chatting it up with EVERYONE! Thank you, AP Chamber of Commerce, for having us again.

GARDEN UPDATE

The Spring Garden is emerging. Perennial herbs and flowers begin their growth as we weed and amend the beds for seeding spring crops. Lettuce, Arugula, Mustard Greens, Collards, Kale, Broccoli, Peas, Carrots, Radish, Daikon, Salad Turnips, Spinach and specialty greens are all in the ground with plenty of time to seed them again (staggered planting).

Dividing out the self-seeding herbs and flowers is a constant process. Stop by on FRIDAYS between 10am-4pm to browse our plant selection! We will also have vegetables started from seed in our greenhouse to offer for your garden. We charge on a sliding scale for those who cannot afford to pay. We also offer SEEDS that we have in bulk that do well if directly seeded in the ground. If you are new to gardening, we invite you to stop by and chat with us!
