It has been a busy start to the year.  I hope your children and family smoothly transitioned back to school.

We've got several events coming up and wanted to be sure you were informed about them!

GT Parent Speaker Series
Tuesday, November 13th
12:15 - 1:30 pm
SBISD Administration Building, Rm 275
Topic: Film Discussions: The Incredibles
Presenter:Jo Freitag,, Australia

Please join us for the third event in our Speaker Series targeted to parents of gifted and talented children.  Bring your lunch and eat while learning a great technique to connect with your children.  Meet other parents, too.

We will gather at 12:00.  Jo will begin at 12:15 and shift to Q & A around 1:00.  We will wrap up by 1:30, though you are welcome to leave as your schedule demands.  The meeting will take place at the SBISD Administration Building (955 Campbell Rd., 77024) in room 275 upstairs.

BE SURE TO WATCH THE INCREDIBLES to prepare for the active discussion we'll have.  It is a child friendly, animated movie that features a family of superheros who struggle with their giftedness.

Mark your calendar to attend these events the rest of the series, as well.  We've got a wonderful line up of speakers from near and far!

Here's a printable schedule.

TAGT Annual Conference & Parent Conference

TAGT is hosting a parent conference in conjunction with their annual professional development conference in Dallas on November 30th.  More information is available  here.  Registration is only $55 for the day!

TAGT is also planning a half-day parent conference in Houston, in coordination with the Houston Coop's Summer Program Expo on January 19th in Deer Park.  More information will be shared as the event draws closer.

The Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented (TAGT) is the largest state organization supporting gifted education in the U.S.  They work to ensure teachers have access to high quality professional development in gifted education, leaders of GT programs have a support network, and parents have access to one another and supportive resources.  TAGT also works to ensure the legislative mandate to provide GT services remains in place and is funded.
Parent membership is $25.

Now is the time to protect gifted education mandates and state funding for gifted education.  Joining TAGT adds your voice to a collective one actively working to support gifted children across Texas.  You'll also receive timely updates regarding gifted education in the news, both in Texas and nationally.

December 21 - Deadline to refer secondary students for GT

Please help us inform parents the deadline to refer current secondary students (students currently enrolled in 6th-11th grade) for the GT program is December 21st.  Parents refer their children by requesting a referral form from the counselor or downloading it (here), assisting their children in completing the form, signing it, and returning it to the counselor before the deadline.

Get Connected!

PAGE Parents and Advocates for Gifted Education is a parent support organization.  It is made up of parents and educators who want to support appropriate programming and services for gifted and talented children.  They work to expand what SBISD offers to GT students, by offering activities and events.  PAGE connects families of gifted students.

Not only is it important for your child to build connections and relationship with other GT students, it's important for you to connect with parents of GT kids.  There are several ways we try to connect the district with parents and to connect parents with one another.

Click here for the PAGE membership form.  Family membership is $10.

#gtchat on Twitter is a global conversation about giftedness every Friday at 6:00 pm Houston time. Parents, educators, and advocates from across the world gather online to discuss various topics pertaining to parenting and teaching gifted children, as well as gifted adults.  If you're not ready to participate, it is okay to watch the discussion. Learn more about participating here.  You can also read transcripts of past discussions here.   ________________________________________________________________
