Can the Trash! Clean Beach Poster Contest Teaches Kids That Every Day Is Coastal Cleanup Day
|
|
Educational campaign reminds residents that
“ocean pollution begins at home.”
REDONDO BEACH, California—Sept. 15, 2021—California Coastal Cleanup Day was on Saturday, but kids can learn about keeping Los Angeles County beaches clean at any time through the Can the Trash! Clean Beach Poster Contest and educational campaign.
Can the Trash! teaches kids how trash from all over Los Angeles County—no matter where they live—can travel through the watershed and end up on beaches like Dockweiler, Venice and Zuma and in the ocean.
Third- through fifth-grade students are also invited to enter the poster contest by submitting artwork containing environmental messages about keeping the beaches and ocean clean. Five winners from each grade will have their artwork wrapped around beach trash barrels on some of Southern California’s most popular beaches. While entries are accepted year-round, the deadline to enter the contest for summer 2022 is Jan. 9, 2022.

Progress Continues on the LA Waterfront
|
|
By Donna Littlejohn, Daily Breeze
The canvas is primed. But it remains unseen by most of the public — kept at bay, for now, by construction fences. Large blocks of cleared open space, a recent tour of the site revealed, sit ready for new restaurants, outdoor dining patios and an amphitheater where the former Ports O’ Call buildings once stood on San Pedro’s waterfront.
Massive container and cruise ships glide through the shipping channel alongside the linear property, creating its own real-life theater.
And key infrastructure elements — the waterfront promenade, benches, a giant swing in the adjacent town square set t. finish up soon and new landscaping — are already in place and await all that comes next.
The coronavirus pandemic managed to push back opening-day plans for San Pedro’s long-awaited new waterfront development, West Harbor. Groundbreaking now will be in early 2022 and the attraction is slated to open the public in late 2023, more than a year later that the dates laid out in the most-recent timelines and plans. A New Resource for Rehoming Pets
|
|
DACC Provides New Resource for Rehoming Pets:
Announcing the Launch of Home to Home™
|
|
One of the toughest decisions a pet owner can face is no longer being able to keep their beloved pet. Pet owners have limited options when rehoming their pet - find a new home on their own, without any safeguards or guidance, or bring their pet to an animal care center, which can cause stress to the pet and family. As part of our commitment of being a resource for pet owners in the Los Angeles County area, the Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) has partnered with Home to Home™ to bring a new interactive tool to help families that need to rehome their pets. This online resource gives pet owners who can no longer keep their pets the opportunity to find them new, loving homes without bringing them to an animal care center. READ MORE

COVID-19 Newsletter - Issue 4 - September 15, 2021
School Districts to Require All Students 12 and Older
to be Vaccinated Against COVID-19
As part of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s efforts to provide the safest possible environment in which to learn and work, all students 12 years old and older will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by January 10, 2022, unless they have a medical or other exemption. This follows a similar announcement to require student vaccinations made by Culver City Unified School District.
To date, schools across the county are implementing robust safety measures including daily health checks for everyone going onto school campuses, indoor masking, comprehensive COVID-19 testing, contact tracing and isolation of cases, increased sanitization/cleaning of school buildings, and upgraded ventilation. Requiring eligible students and staff to be vaccinated provides a powerful additional layer of protection to everyone in the school community.
