The Vanished Port: Middletown and the Slave Economy of the Caribbean, 1650-1824 with Erik Hesselberg
Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 7:00 PM
Back by popular demand, Erik will provide an illustrated talk about Middletown’s connection to the slave-based sugar economy of the Caribbean islands and the wealth it produced, as evidenced by the sumptuous dwellings that once lined the CT River waterfront, and the fine interior furnishings that survived.
Middletown was a site of extensive trade with the Caribbean Islands, where Connecticut Valley agricultural products were exchanged for the proverbial sugar, molasses, and rum. Erik will share stories of Middletown merchants with ties to the Puritans and the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Spotlight On Our Volunteers
|
|
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, you can find Maureen Tarbox and Chris DeLisle sorting thousands of letters, photos, documents, and objects related to East Haddam resident and internationally reknowned artist, W. Langdon Kihn. Many of Kihn's paintings, drawings, photographs, diaries, artifacts, and much-welcomed financial support for preservation materials have been donated to the Museum by his nephew, Dr. Cliff Bragdon and Mrs. Sarah Bragdon.
Maureen and Chris have spent a year and a half reviewing and categorizing this extensive collection by subject. They have become experts in all things Kihn! If you want to know anything about Mr. Kihn, Chris and Maureen are our Kihn collection specialists! We thank Chris and Maureen for their dedication to this very important task!
