Heatwave Prompts Look at Whether the Electric Grid is Ready for the Future
The president of Colorado’s largest electricity supplier, Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy, acknowledged strains but told the Denver Post planning has paid off. This week’s heat wave across the West “does present challenges for us. But we are prepared for those challenges,” Xcel-Colorado president Robert Kenney said, pledging full cooperation with state regulators. “We know the higher temperatures, and sustained higher temperatures, are climate-driven. We are prepared. We have our own meteorological studies. We pay attention to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. We make sure we have adequate resources online,” Kenney said.
Colorado’s Public Utilities Commission is scheduled to explore utility readiness to meet increased electricity demands this summer and next. PUC officials want to know about “plant outages, tight regional electricity markets, and unanticipated risks surrounding the near-term completion of certain solar projects,” an agency spokesman said. Xcel officials are expected to address “resource adequacy in the coming years” and the broader situation around the West. Read Complete Artilce

DOE Announces Breakthrough in Residential Cold Climate
Heat Pump Technology | ENERGY.GOV; Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that American heat pump manufacturer Lennox International became the first partner in DOE's Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology Challenge to develop a next-generation electric heat pump that can more effectively heat homes in northern climates relative to today’s models. Cold climate heat pumps (CCHPs) can provide high-efficiency heating in freezing temperatures without producing greenhouse gas emissions and can save families as much as $500 a year on their utility bills. This achievement is a massive step toward providing reliable clean heating and cooling for millions of American families through domestically produced CCHPS, which is crucial to reducing energy costs and achieving President Biden’s goal of a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

The Colorado School of Mines Capstone Senior Design Program is actively seeking projects and clients for the interdisciplinary engineering student teams for the Fall semester. Each semester, students go beyond the textbook to solve open-ended, experiential design problems sponsored by industry, community, non-profit, government, and organizations. Students work on different types of open-ended design challenge projects, including:
- Product development (prototype build and efficiency improvements)
- Process improvements (system, materials, traffic)
- Plan conceptualization (reclamation, sites, buildings)
Capstone Design@Mines Project Submission Webpage Please consider submitting a project and encourage your colleagues to consider working with a student team. Refer to our Capstone website where all potential clients can review project requirements and submit their project ideas. The deadline for Capstone Senior Design projects is July 10.
