The Continued Ministry of Matthew Briggs
Matthew Briggs (1989-2021), a member of the 20s & 30s community, considered St. Mark's his spiritual home. As Matthew prepared for his death while living with the sudden diagnosis of a rare and aggressive cancer for which no currently effective treatments exist, he wrote, "Matt became most excited, most alive, when engaged in conversations around oppression and liberation." He left behind few assets to distribute in his last will and testament, but he made clear his wishes to 1) serve marginalized youth and 2) lovingly challenge privileged youth to consider how they may more equitably share their power." Money donated to Saint Mark's in Matthew's loving memory was used in an interpretation consistent with the social justice core of his wish to invite The Rev. Wil Gafney, Ph.D. to Saint Mark's. She will lead "Womanist Midrash & Biblical Interpretation" this Saturday December 2, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, and will preach at Saint Mark's on Sunday December 3rd. As Matthew sang, "if your theology's not about liberation, back away from the pulpit."
